It's official Shaquille O'Neal is a member of the 2010-2011 Boston Celtics team. When I first heard rumors about this signing I didn't know how to feel. On one hand, I love Shaq I think he is GREAT for the game of basketball. He's a guy who loves to play the game, reaches across all demographics and is a great ambassador for the sport. On the other hand, rumors have flown that he was one of the causes of the demise of the Lakers teams he was a part of and he was also the demise more recently of the Cleveland Cavaliers team that the Celtics decimated in the playoffs last year.
So...I was on the fence.
Now I am securely over the fence and excited to see Shaq Diesel (or as I like to call him the ORIGINAL SUPERMAN) in a white and green uniform.
From a basketball perspective it will be nice to have a big man who can score other than Kevin Garnett. It will be nice for Rajon Rondo to have someone to dish the ball to who can literally just throw it down. Imagine a front court of Kevin Garnett and Glen Davis with Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal coming off the bench...it will be magical.
So, Miami, you can have your LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh pairings all day. I will take my rag tag bunch of aging superstars to the bank every time. I still love Ray Ray from downtown. Pierce off the dribble (although slightly less often then he used.) Garnett with the fade away J. Shaq with the power moves on the block. Jermaine O'Neal with...whatever Jermaine O'Neal does. Compliment that with the BEST point guard in the league and the best backup big man in the game (Glen Davis) and you've got a team that can compete.
Don't get me wrong, the road to the finals will go through Miami and it will be a tough road, but powered by a little Diesel I like our chances...let's just hope Doc can keep the mega-star mentality under control.

I won't pretend to know how Bruins fans feel this morning, after a disappointing post-season last year and a nearly disastrous season this year, I won't pretend to know how great it feels to finish off the Sabres in six.
I won't pretend to know how many goals the Bruins scored.
I won't pretend to know who plays goalie for the Bruins.
I won't pretend to know, really anything about the Bruins.
What I do know, is that last night's win was a big win for Bruins fans everywhere who have waited far too long to watch their B's skate to victory in a playoff series.
So, I say, congratulations to the Boston Bruins for what I have heard was a tremendous series. I won't pretend I am excited for round two, but I know a whole lot of people that are.
I won't pretend to know why Josh Beckett is struggling to find his mojo.I won't pretend to know why the Red Sox seem to have all the fire power they need, but can't find an arm in the bullpen to hold a lead.
I won't pretend to know why Papi continues to struggle...ok well maybe that one's the roids.
I won't pretend to know if the Red Sox will ever snap out of this funk.
What I do know is that they battled back yesterday. Yes, it was against the lowly Blue Jays, but there is fight in them. This is good news for Red Sox nation who have watched this team stumble out of the gates. The good news with this team is they are hitting, so maybe Dice-K's appearance this Saturday will be the shot in the arm the pitching staff needs to get the Boston Red Sox back in the winning frame of mind.
So, I say to the Boston Red Sox, keep plugging away boys, eventually this will all work itself out. I refuse to believe that the second highest payroll in baseball has produced basement dwellers.
I won't pretend to know why Adalius Thomas didn't work out with the New England Patriots.I won't pretend to know why he didn't fit in with an organization that usually brings players in and slides them nicely into place without a hint of a problem.
I won't pretend to know why he went from a Humble Pie eating Patriot to a defector in 2009.
I won't pretend to know why Coach Belichick seemed to treat him differently then some of the other guys on the roster.
What I do know is that we do NOT want him heading to Gang Green. The Jets are already stacked as it is and the last thing we need is another guy lined up across from Tom Brady that has a score to settle. We should've traded him by any means necessary AWAY from the New York Jets.
So, I say to the New England Patriots who have had a mediocre at best off season, GOOD LUCK fellas, you're going to need it. When the New York Jets come into town, I am not 100% it's going to be pretty. In fact I am quite sure it's going to be UGLY.
I won't pretend to know how Paul Pierce and the rest of the big three are feeling after letting a series sweep slip through their hands on Sunday against the Miami Heat.I won't pretend to know if their aging legs are still holding up under the pressure of a long NBA season and the start of the grueling playoffs.
I won't pretend to know if Glen Davis will show up as he did in Game 2 or look like he's stuck in mud like he did in Game 4.
I won't pretend to know if Dwayne Wade can legitimately put up another set of 46 on the Celtics tonight at the Garden.
What I do know is that the Celtics have been must see TV for the last four games and nothing has changed tonight. The Garden will be rocking and the Boston Celtics need to deliver for their fans, but also for their bodies as an extra days rest before they head to the Q (let's be real, they'll be playing the Cavs) is a MUST.
So, I say to you Boston Celtics, get out there and get the job done tonight. We're counting on you to keep this positive Boston vibe going tonight.

It could've been worse, we could live in Kansas City and have started this weekend with literally nothing to look forward to. We might've been stuck going to see the movie the Losers rather than watching our teams become the losers in a couple of good games this afternoon.
From the opening tip, it wasn't meant to be a sweep. It certainly would've been nice to see the Celtics get an extra day of rest before they had to inevitably take on the Cavs after they dispose of the Chicago Bulls. But alas, it wasn't meant to be. Dwayne Wade's 46 points was just a little bit too much for the C's to handle.
Let's be real, the Celtics just weren't "there" today from the start, the reason it felt like it was a game is that the Heat are just so over matched that even a mediocre performance from the Celtics keeps them in a game. Don't get me wrong, the Celtics had glimpses of solid play and they probably should've won the game, but Dwayne Wade was way too much for a lackluster performance to overcome.
Early foul trouble took Paul Pierce and Ray Allen out of the game and they never really found their rhythm. Kevin Garnett had a solid offensive game, but he uncharacteristically missed some assignments on the defensive end. There was no fire in the belly of Glen Davis off the bench and Rasheed Wallace took quite a few ill advised shots in big spots. Even Nate Robinson got a shot to shine and he blew his opportunity to make an impact with Rondo on the bench.
Even with the lackluster play the Celtics had a shot to close out the series down the stretch, but they went 2-8 from the free throw line (including a VERY uncharacteristic 1-4 from Ray Allen.) It just wasn't meant to be.
Now the Celtics will have to close it out on the parquet at the Garden in front of a home town crowd, good for the wallets of the ownership, but not so great for the legs of the big three.
Oh ya, then there're the Red Sox who continue to stumble, even when we expected so much from them coming into the weekend against the lowly Baltimore Orioles. Pretty soon we'll be talking about the basement dwelling Red Sox. It's not looking good for our local nine. I am not one to count them out after only 19 games, but losing to the Orioles in extra innings does not really give one optimism for the upcoming summer.
Is it too harsh to call our teams Losers? Of course it is, but lose they did this weekend, but at least we had competitive sports to watch. It could be worse, we might've had to go see this this weekend...

Despite what this picture might suggest, this is not a blog JUST about Rasheed Wallace, although he will have a role to play in it.
The Boston Celtics avoided another embarrassing fourth quarter collapse by holding off Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers to win 117-113. This was a game the Celtics really needed and one that the Cavs probably could have cared less about and for three quarters it showed.
The Celtics put up 98 points through three quarters of play and with about 5 minutes to go in the fourth had only added 5 more points to the total. It looked like what has become an all too familiar scene for the Celtics this year was about to play out. They were about to blow a 22 point lead and drop another winnable game to a team they will NEED to beat come playoff time.
Lebron James did his King James thing and turned it on in the fourth battling to bring the Cavs back and put them up one, but the Celtics held him off and were able to pull out a much needed win.
This game though, had an under current that I, for one, did not like. It's no surprise that Kevin Garnett is a talker, but today he was jawing with Lebron James to a whole new level. The two went back and forth and clearly got under each others skin (KG got at Lebron more then the other way around.) Lebron was distracted at the free throw line and missed a handful of key free throws that could've broken the Celtics' back. He missed them and the Celtics won.
It was more then the talking between players that gets to me, it's also the constant complaining to the officials. This game saw Cleveland pick up four technicals and Mike Brown get chucked. On the Celtics' side of the ball, they received two technicals, one from Rajon Rondo and one from Rasheed Wallace who is dangerously close to getting a one game suspension.
There was even more talking then that. Rasheed Wallace started mouthing off to Doc Rivers during one stage of the game, which caught him some pine, rightfully so.
Rasheed Wallace, Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett, Lebron James, Doc Rivers, Paul Pierce...I implore you, take a cue from Ray Allen who had 33 points for the Celtics this afternoon. Ray Ray goes out and gets the job done. He keeps his mouth shut, for the most part and doesn't blame anybody else on the court for his struggles. Everyone in the league should take a cue from this guy.
The more NBA games I watch, the more I am disgusted by the attitudes of the players and how nothing seems to be their fault. They all do it and leading the charge are the superstars, Lebron, Kobe Bryant, Paul Pierce, they all do it and it is a detriment to the game.
I am not saying to never complain about a call or talk a little trash, but the extent to which the players in today's NBA talk distracts from the game and quite frankly it is entirely less effective then if you have a legitimate gripe with a call or a "real" beef with a competitor. When you're constantly complaining it loses a little luster.

Wednesday night was a night 7 years in the making. I took my 7 year old son Tyler, to his first professional sporting event. We saw the Celtics vs. the Thunder. What a night. The only thing that could have made it better was if the Celtics had won. To start the day off, I was offered tickets by one of my friends, and thought that it might be a good idea to bring my son to his first Celtic's game. I called home and asked if he wanted to go. I got the twenty questions, how long would it be, would I have fun, and so on. He couldn't make up his mind, so, because I was given these only hours before game time, I needed to move quick, in order to get someone to go with me. So, I called Timmy to let him know that I wasn't going to be able to do the podcast, and to see if he would be able to go. While I was talking to him, my wife called me back and said he was crying and really wanted to go. It was set, he was going with me.We headed into the game, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. A calm ride in, parked under the Garden, so we didn't have to carry our jackets. Took the elevator up paid for parking, then into the pro shop. I had to keep steering him away from the Bruins gear, and kept saying,"We are going to see the Celtic's not the Bruins." That game may come next year. I asked him what player shirt he wanted, he was locked on Ray Allen. He didn't even mention anyone else. I guess this is when I should mention that he has never watched a game on TV and only knows the players, because I point them out in highlights on TV. He seemed to have Ray as his favorite. So, a shirt, hat, foam finger and key chain later, we headed into the building and to our seats.
Still, everything was calm and quiet, the focus was on getting nachos. We enjoyed nachos and a diet coke, before the game started. We stood for the national anthem, then it was time for tip off. This is when the fun began. He was bouncing out of his seat for the whole game. At halftime when a bunch of people were leaving there seats, he said, should we be leaving now. I explained that is was halftime and that we would leave after the third quarter and I would be happy he made it that far. Well, the third quarter ended and he asked if we had to leave, I asked him why, he said I think I want to stay to the end. I couldn't have been a prouder Dad at that moment. Now, I was worried they would lose and blow the whole night. He was yelling, "DEFENSE" when on defense, and telling them to get a basket on offense. With less than a minute to go and they are down, four. It's going to be close. They just couldn't shut the Thunder down, and eventually lost 109 - 104. He accepted the defeat, and said,"The other team played really good and deserved to win." He was able to enjoy the game, cheer and root, like it was game seven of the NBA finals, and go home happy and so glad that he went.
It was a night I will cherish forever. Oh yeah, there was another kid I was impressed with, Kevin Durant. He scored so effortlessly. Ray Allen was on him most of the night, Pierce covered him the last five minutes or so, but the Celtics didn't have an answer for him. Even though the Celtics lost, it was the best game I have ever been too. Looking forward to doing this with the other majors sports, but for now I will have a big smile on my face, every time I talk about Tyler's first Celtic's game.

After a meeting today with Rasheed Wallace, his agent, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Danny Ainge, the C's offered 'Sheed a contract today...UGH.I guess my plea fell on deaf ears this morning. What's that all about Danny? I thought you were an avid reader and listened to everything I had to say.
Well at least Timmy and Scotty would be fired up...although Rasheed says he is not in any rush to make any decisions. I can't imagine a trip to play with Lebron and Shaq in Cleveland wouldn't be pretty inticing to him.

Is it a bad sign that KG was sent home instead of having him play in tonight's game? He will also not play tomoorow night in Boston as the C's close out the regular-season against the Wizards.I honestly don't think this is a bad sign, I actually think this is a very good sign. I think this is a sign that Doc is cautious with his PTP'er's and it worked out well for them last year. There are very few teams that will sit a guy for six-ten minutes of any one quarter, a guy that is their superstar, like Doc does.
Granted sometimes circumstances dictate that one of the Big Three sit for a little while and rest and the fact that they are all pushing the upper age limits of the NBA is something too, but I think Doc's decision to send KG home and let him rehab a couple more days is a good one.
Bad sign or not, the playoffs start on Saturday and I'll be at the game on Monday...tix came in the mail today!! GO C's get it boys!!

Tonight King James and the Cavs roll into the Garden and you will hear everyone say, this could be a preview of the Eastern Conference Finals...King James and his men versus The Captain...slow that train down one minute. This is NOT a preview. We will be sans Kevin Garnett and we are banged up generally all the way around. I wouldn't be surprised if Lebron puts a hurtin' on us tonight.In fact, I might watch the game tonight with the sound down because the announcers inevitably will talk about how Lebron James is the greatest basketball player they have ever seen. While he is definitely up there with the greats, it doesn't have to be said on every broadcast. Give me a break!!
I will say this one thing about Lebron, I don't hate him or his talent, because he seems to be a genuine guy who is just a phenomenal basketball player. Unlike Kobe, who seems to be smug and think he is better than everybody, Lebron goes out and gets the job done, night in and night out with very little to say.
So tonight, I think there will be plenty of talk about the possibility that the C's and the Cavs will meet in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals and you know what, that may very well happen and this time the Celtics probably won't have home court advantage, so they'll have to win on the road. Tonight though, will NOT be a preview of that series. Tonight is just another game on the schedule as far as I am concerned...you know except for the opening ceremonies and the horns playing when King James enters the Garden. DOWN ON ONE KNEE SUBJECTS!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWNNNNN

If you've been wondering where the vaunted defense of the world champion Boston Celtics has gone, so have we. Even though they eked out a win against the NJ Nets last night 115-111, they gave up 111 POINTS!! That is very un-Celtic like.And even Doc noticed it as the C's held two practices and a morning shootaround before the game dedicated to defense and yet the Celts still let Vince Carter go wild all over them with 34 and oh ya, they ALMOST LOST THE GAME!!
How have the C's been doing of late on the defensive side of the ball? Not so great. The C's have given up 99 or more points in four of their last six games. NOT GOOD!! This type of defense is not going to cut it when Lebron and company are on the floor and it is certainly not going to cut it in the playoffs.
Yes, you could point to the missing link of KG not being there to stop up the lane, but guess what, the C's could be without Kevin Garnett for more than just this stretch. I hate to say it, but one twisted ankle in game 1 of the opening series in the playoffs, the C's could struggle and all hell could break loose with an opening round loss. Don't yell at me, it COULD happen. I am of course hoping it doesn't.
All this panic could be resolved if Doc can rally the team and get them to play some defense. Maybe they need their rallying cry from KG...ANYTHING IS POSSIBLLLLLLLLLLLLLLE!!!

Should I be a homer like Timmy and be proud of Marcus Camby for knocking off my beloved C's last night? HELL NO!! Marcus, you ruined UMass and you've now ruined the Celtics, well at least for one night.In a game that the Celtics were never really "in" despite being up 78-73 midway through the fourth, the Clippers showed up to play and well, the Celtics, didn't. Plain and simple, they didn't want to win.
Just ask Doc Rivers, "We were awful," coach Doc Rivers said. "We absolutely did not deserve to win that game. I thought we played small all night. We pouted all night. We just thought we could just show up and win a game and we didn't. We didn't make the extra pass all night. We walked the ball up the floor all night. There were so many things we did poor. The fact that we actually had a chance was amazing." - Boston.com
So, the Celtics finished their looooooong West coast road trip which began on February 11th, 4-2 and maybe more importantly they come back to Boston injury riddled. There is KG who is already home in Boston nursing a sore knee and after last night the captain may be sidelined with a dislocated thumb, although he valiently played on last night, almost giving the C's a chance to win.
In any other season, with any other team a 4-2 West Coast road trip would be phenomenal. With this team, we're talking about the one that got away in Los Angeles (and sadly it wasn't to the Lakers.)

Adam joined the TNA this week as both Timmy and Billy Corey were on assignment in Lowell...YA DUDE. Speaking of which, check out this pic of their ringside seats at the Gloves kid!!
So many Lowell kids wanted to beat the crap out of each other so they had to add a second night and that's where Timmy and BC were tonight, so Scotty Dukes and Adam got you covered.
Everything from the Celtics nine game win streak to Jags heading to Tampa Bay, we've got everything in between.
Oh did we mention that we're STILL WAITING ON TEK? Yup...deadline is soon so Jason is either going to accept the Sox $5 million deal or retire. I hope he comes back.
A couple other news of note, Matty Cassel's franchise tag will set the Pats back $14.6 mil and will Adam's campaign to bring in TO come true? Probably not. Thanks for checking out the show tonight.

If there wasn't a ring ceremony at the begining of last nights Celtics game against the Cavs, I would be sitting here saying, the perimeter game was nowhere to be found, the first half defense was a bit shotty, but you know what, we got the win and that's all that matters. Well, not aaaaaaalll that matters.Let's be real, it wasn't at all about the win or loss last night at the Gahden. Yes it was important to start the defense of our title with a win, especially against the Cavs, but the spotlight was on the trophy, the rings and the players last night and boy did they deliver. Not since Larry Bird's famous "There's only one place I'd rather be..." speech have I gotten so choked up watching a player celebrate a title. The Truth, who was the Truth last night dropping 27 points on the Cavs and stepping up to the mic to deliver one of the best all time championship "acceptance" speeches, was left in tears as I will admit I was as well. If you weren't at least moved by the ceremony, turn in your green and white and start praying for a Laker's championship (NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!)
So Boston, bask in it. You deserve it. Congratulations, the City of Champions lives.

WALTHAM - When in Waltham, do as the veterans do.That's the lesson rookies J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker are learning this summer, as vets Ray Allen and Paul Pierce were in Waltham Thursday going through workouts with Strength and Conditioning Coach Bryan Doo, gearing themselves up for an October training camp that's just a few weeks away.
"This is the same commitment we had a year ago when everyone got in early," Pierce said. "Just because we won a championship -- that's what the Boston Celtics [are] all about. Winning championships. So we're here early to try to do it again."
Allen, who's been alternating between Waltham and UCONN in Storrs, CT for offseason workouts, agreed that the team is showing the same commitment he saw last summer before the trip to Rome, and the new guys are already on the same page when it comes to dedication.
"We're in here trying to take care of our bodies and get ready for a new season," Allen said.
The challenge for the veterans is keeping themselves near season shape throughout the summer, so that when camp hits they're ready to go.
"As most of us have gotten older, you've got to keep your body right at that level where you're in shape, but you kind of relax a little bit and get away from the game," Allen said. "You've got to get away from the game to get rejuvenated for that next run."
After a few hours of workouts that included running with car tires strapped to his back, Pierce organized a pickup game between his teammates. Pierce played alongside Gabe Pruitt, Glen Davis, Patrick O'Bryant and J.R. Giddens, and they matched up against Ray Allen, Tony Allen, Rajon Rondo, Darius Miles and Leon Powe. Highlights of the game included a nasty swat by Miles, and a power slam in traffic from Leon Powe reminiscent of his Game 2 dunkfest against the Lakers.
Kendrick Perkins, who re-injured his left shoulder during the NBA Finals, was in the house for cardio work but did not participate in the pick-up game. Walker, meanwhile, has just returned to basketball activities in the last few days but also did not play in the game. He's been working hard on rehabilitating his knee and says he'll be ready to go for training camp.
"I'm just trying to get ready to contribute," Walker said of his offseason workouts. Walker's been talking to Tony Allen quite a bit about rehabbing knees, since both guys have sustained multiple knee injuries. But he's mostly just been impressed by the intensity of the workouts he's gone through with the Celtics. He's especially impressed by what he's seen from the veterans coming off a championship season.
"It just shows you why they're All-Pro guys," Walker said of his veteran teammates. "They come in and get their work in early, and they have a thirst for winning now. They want to win another championship now." Perhaps Pierce has been most demonstrative in setting the example this summer. When he wasn't encouraging his younger teammates during the pick-up game, Pierce was competing with them in an overhead medicine ball toss drill that's designed to build explosiveness.
While the workouts are serious business, that doesn't mean the Captain can't have a little fun with them either. He mocked Walker's first attempt at the medicine ball toss, and when Giddens asked Doo who won a footwork drill between himself and Pierce, the Truth informed him, "We either tied or I won."
"We're gonna get in shape, get ready, but also we're going to have fun," Pierce said. Are you kidding me? Now they are going to look into and keep a closer eye on players to make sure they are not flashing gang signs? And it’s all because of Paul Pierce? This is just funny to me.No, there is nothing funny about gangs or gang signs. It’s very serious business on the streets of cities all across the country (including BTV – WORD.) Let’s be real here though, does anybody really think that a professional athlete, with cameras on them all of the time during a game, are going to flash a gang sign? This is absolute absurdity.
Besides, this season, Paul Pierce won’t have to flash a gang sign, he’ll just shove his NBA Finals MVP in the face of all haters and they will be blinded by his ring. Now that’s a gang sign I could get behind.

God Bless Paul Pierce. Have you seen him once since the C's won the 17th banner without a smile on his face? I like him more and more everyday. I've always liked Paul, but since he has gotten that monkey off of his back he has risen to a whole new level for me. He has a swagger about him, the kind of swagger I only saw from him when Twoine was here and it's back baby and better then ever.

Saw this interview on Sportscenter this morning. It was good in it's 2 minute version, but in this 15 minute version is fantastic. You gotta check it out. Take a little time and watch it. Nice to get some reflection from the CHAMPS!!
