The Losers: Too Harsh?

It could've been worse, we could live in Kansas City and have started this weekend with literally nothing to look forward to. We might've been stuck going to see the movie the Losers rather than watching our teams become the losers in a couple of good games this afternoon.

From the opening tip, it wasn't meant to be a sweep. It certainly would've been nice to see the Celtics get an extra day of rest before they had to inevitably take on the Cavs after they dispose of the Chicago Bulls. But alas, it wasn't meant to be. Dwayne Wade's 46 points was just a little bit too much for the C's to handle.

Let's be real, the Celtics just weren't "there" today from the start, the reason it felt like it was a game is that the Heat are just so over matched that even a mediocre performance from the Celtics keeps them in a game. Don't get me wrong, the Celtics had glimpses of solid play and they probably should've won the game, but Dwayne Wade was way too much for a lackluster performance to overcome.

Early foul trouble took Paul Pierce and Ray Allen out of the game and they never really found their rhythm. Kevin Garnett had a solid offensive game, but he uncharacteristically missed some assignments on the defensive end. There was no fire in the belly of Glen Davis off the bench and Rasheed Wallace took quite a few ill advised shots in big spots. Even Nate Robinson got a shot to shine and he blew his opportunity to make an impact with Rondo on the bench.

Even with the lackluster play the Celtics had a shot to close out the series down the stretch, but they went 2-8 from the free throw line (including a VERY uncharacteristic 1-4 from Ray Allen.) It just wasn't meant to be.

Now the Celtics will have to close it out on the parquet at the Garden in front of a home town crowd, good for the wallets of the ownership, but not so great for the legs of the big three.

Oh ya, then there're the Red Sox who continue to stumble, even when we expected so much from them coming into the weekend against the lowly Baltimore Orioles. Pretty soon we'll be talking about the basement dwelling Red Sox. It's not looking good for our local nine. I am not one to count them out after only 19 games, but losing to the Orioles in extra innings does not really give one optimism for the upcoming summer.

Is it too harsh to call our teams Losers? Of course it is, but lose they did this weekend, but at least we had competitive sports to watch. It could be worse, we might've had to go see this this weekend...

Ep98 - f 'O' Pas

YES, we know we spelled Faux Pas wrong, listen to the episode and find 'O'ut why. It might have something to do with 'O'bnoxious 'O'rioles fans. It might have something to do with Bobby Duggan's 'O'bnoxious choice of headwear. 'O'r it might have something to do with all of the above.

We're nearing Episode 100, help us celebrate by telling us where you listen and when you started listening. E-mail us your thoughts and we will read them on Episode 100, a week from tonight. We might be stuffing our faces with cake while we read them, but we'll read them none the less.

Will the Red Sox Catch The Rays?

At times, it feels like the Boston Red Sox will never catch the Tampa Bay Rays in the hunt for first place in the AL East. To some degree, it doesn’t really matter, as long as the Red Sox keep their spot atop the chase for the wild card with a two game lead over the Minnesota Twins through the end of the season. But, wouldn’t it be nice for them to finish the season as the AL East champs and to see the New York Yankees miss the playoffs?

I might be the only one that turns on my TV every morning after a Red Sox win, wishing and hoping that the Rays somehow dropped a game the night before so we could pick up a game. I will even sit in front of ESPN praying for an off night for the Rays so we can pick up ½ a game, anything to make the race for first place, actually seem like a race. Somehow though, it always seems that when we win, they win and when we lose, they lose (although sometimes they win and that’s even worse.)

Will this struggle to pick up a couple of games on the Rays ever end? I think it will and here is why. The Rays have 49 games left to play, 30 of which take place away from the Trop. The Rays road record this season is a pitiful 23-28 (almost as bad as the Red Sox) and

with just 19 games left on the schedule at Tropicana Field where they are 45-17, it’s a tough road to travel for the Rays.

The Red Sox on the other hand have a pretty even road v. home schedule for the rest of the season. They play 25 games at Fenway Park and 22 games on the road. The Sox record virtually mirrors that of the Rays as they are 40-16 at the Fens and 26-33 on the road.

So the schedule certainly favors the Red Sox, but wait, there is one more kink in the plan to get the Sox to the top, head to head play. The two teams have six games left against each other, three in Tampa and three in Boston, so that pretty much evens the playing field.

Scheduling aside, what the season will come down to is experience and the Boston Red Sox

clearly have the edge when it comes to veteran leadership and September baseball experience. However, let us not forget that in 2007, during their World Series run, two of the biggest
contributors to the Red Sox success were two rookies, Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury. Could this be the year that Evan Longoria puts his stamp on the MLB?

Will the Red Sox catch the Rays? The answer is, a tentative yes. The Red Sox bats have returned and their pitching will come around. Eventually the young arms on the Rays pitching staff will wear out and they will slowly fade into contention for the wild card and lose in the first round of the playoffs. And then, there are the Yankees who are playing for third place, trying to fight off a deadly Baltimore team.

#500 for Manny Ramirez

Tonight one of the greatest hitters of all time hit his 500th homerun and in the process helped his team take the lead in a tight one in Baltimore.

It was just Manny being Manny tonight in Baltimore as the Boston Red Sox needed his bat as always and not only did it come at a good time for his team, but it also came at a good time for Manny as he's been trying to get this monkey off of his back for weeks now. Now he can just swing the bat without any pressure.

Manny Being Manny...gotta love it. Even though the Sox are stinking it up right now, Manny continues to entertain. After his great catch, he high fives a fan in the crowd and then pops out this gem...

"It was fun. I love it. I think, you know, that's how you get your All-Star vote. I'm pretty sure that guy's gonna vote for me. It's one at a time, you know. Get your votes one at a time."
