We could be talking about Boston or New York, even Gainsville. Alas, it's all about Chelmsford. Coach K has done it again. He has won both the fantasy baseball and now the fantasy football championships in Wicked Pissa Nation. Annoyed, some (Uncle Dukes) shocked, none. This guy has a fricken 4 Square trophy from Russell Mill Swim & Tennis Club. Unreal! Timmy and Rubba Shoes check in with the Coach to confirm that he will make good on his promise to "buy the trophy if he wins the league." Also the guys will discuss why the Bruins game at Fenway made one of them cry. Really? We'll also get Pats predictions from the pigskin prognosticators "Dugan & Dukes." The Celtics are limping off the MASH unit and the Sox are most likely done shopping for the groceries right? So, how is dinner gonna taste this Summer? Timmy opted out of the Patriots home playoff game this year and he also opted out of the 4th quarter of yesterdays game at Gillette because he heard there was a sale at Old Navy...it's true.

I'm all set. I don't need more snow. If you are reading this in Florida or Phoenix, my apologies, I don't wan't to bore you with the laborious details of life in New England in late winter. The networks inundate us with shots from Red Sox camp and we are here shoveling slush. F#cking all set. The question is, why am I having so much trouble dealing with the crappy weather this year? I can't pin point it for you but I know this, I am all set.

Just a week ago we had temperatures nearing FIFTY!?! Monday, April 6th can't come quickly enough. Baseball back in the Bean. The weather won't matter then, as the Spring will be forced upon us like a 2nd lap dance at the Foxy Lady. Bring it on! Warm weather, shorts and that first time of the season that you are standing in the sun and feel the warmth. That's what I want. You'll be driving home from work with the Sox on your radio and the windows down. It might still be a little chilly for the windows yet, but you don't care. Castiglione's voice meshed in with the sound of your tires rushing over sandy asphalt as you cruise home to see Fenway in all her glory.

The bright colors of Fenway, bunting and all. Beautiful. I will be lucky enough to not have to call in sick to catch opening day. My boys will give me time enough to watch the game in between naps and snacks. We'll have hot dogs (fat free of course) and smile at the fact that from opening day onward, we'll have a game to watch almost every day for six months. Red Sox Baseball. I love it. Until then, here I stand, hot dogs at the ready...shovel in hand. Go Sox!

Imagine its Soxtober. The Red Sox have had a grueling first couple of series to come out of the AL and head to the World Series. The LA Dodgers have breezed through the first couple of rounds on the bat of none other then Manny Ramirez and have taken the NL to make it to the World Series. It’s an East Coast v. West Coast showdown unlike any other since Tupac and Biggie made the streets bleed.

Now that both teams have clinched playoff berths it’s time to look forward to what could possibly be one of the best showdowns in baseball this year. Sure it may be premature to even consider that these two teams might meet in the series, but it’s a possibility and an intriguing one at that.
First, there is the Manny storyline. Of course this storyline has been well documented over the past year and in Boston even before that, but Manny has become a model citizen in the Dodgers clubhouse, he has become an RBI machine and he is looking like the Manny of old, you know right after he bitched his way out of Cleveland to come the Red Sox where he showed what a team player he could be. This is of course old fashioned Manny. You’re unhappy where you are, you want a trade, force the ownership’s hand by being a headache for the entire team, get the trade you want and become a model player for the team you get traded to.

So why is this a great storyline if the Dodgers meet the Red Sox in the Series? There are a number of reasons.

1.) What will the Fenway Faithful’s reaction be to Manny returning to our beloved ballpark?
2.) What is the over under on Joe Buck making a derogatory remark about the way the Red Sox treated Manny?
3.) Will Manny’s dealer show up inside the Monster to give him his “medicine?” These and many other questions would be answered during this East/West Coast battle.

Next there is Nomah Garciapara. Nomar will undoubtedly get a warm welcome from the Fenway Faithful; after all, his trade is really what put the new generation of Red Sox Nation into motion and started the Red Sox on the roller coaster ride that the team has been on since 2004.

Of course, we can’t forget our boy Derek Lowe. Or can we? I thought he had gone off to LA to wallow in obscurity for the rest of his career, but turns out, he’s had a nice season for the Dodgers. He hasn’t been lights out, but he’s been ok for the team with a 3.29 ERA and a 14-11 record. Again, probably no hard feelings for D-Lowe from the Fenway Faithful, because after his performance in the 2004 playoffs he is a Boston hero forever.

Finally, there would be the return of Joe Torre to Fenway Park. Ask any Red Sox fan what they think of Joe Torre and they will say the same thing, “I’ve always respected and admired him, even when he was with the Yankees.” This won’t change and we’ll still want to beat him, but won’t it be nice to see him come back to the Fens in a different uniform so we can show him the respect he deserves? It would also solidify the big fat middle finger that the rest of the league is holding up to the Yankees, like, F-U Yankees your manager still has it and oh by the way, you DON’T!!

I know it’s a bit of a dream to have the Dodgers come into town to play the Red Sox in the World Series. I know there is a lot of baseball to be played before we even get to that point and the likelihood of this storyline to play out is pretty slim, but hey, it could happen and if it does, it’s going to make for some compelling baseball!!

Schilling never threw a single pitch. Manny's dew-rag no longer has a "B" on the front, it is now Dodger Blue with an "LA" embroidered in white. Although he and Joe Torre are headed to postseason play, Derek Jeter is not. The Yankees are headed to Tampa next week, not to play the Rays but to hit the links and begin their off season preparations. The Yankees are going home early. Fine! The weirdest news is still to come. Jonathon Papelbon stole three bases tonight. No, he was not pinch running. He did all of this while soaked in beer. As part of the 2008 celebration of clinching a playoff berth, Pap literally pulled up and "stole" first, second and third base and gave them to fans that remained at Fenway to help the local nine and company celebrate.

In the best news of the day, the Red Sox broke a long standing rule concerning the retirement of players numbers. Recognizing the contributions of Johnny Pesky along with the realization that his career numbers were buffered by three years of military service. The Red Sox announced that they will indeed retire Pesky's number 6 in a ceremony Friday night at Fenway. This marks the eve of his 89th birthday and makes him the first player not inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame to be recognized by the franchise with this honor. All in all a fantastic day on Landsdowne. In a related note, Heidi Watney looks great soaking wet with champagne.

In cased you missed it on any number of the media reports from last nights Red Sox game, Fenway Park was sold out for the 456th time which is a MLB record. There is no question this is an amazing feat by the fans of Boston. Not a surprising one for anyone who lives in the City of Champions, but it is amazing.

So, congratulations to you Boston sports fans. You made this possible. It is an impressive record and it's not everyday that fans can break a record, but in Boston we set records on and off the field.

What then, if the ownership of the Red Sox decided to build a new and improved Fenway Park (HA like that is possible) what would happen then, would our beloved Red Sox be able to sell out a a 50, 60 or even 70,000 seat stadium? I think you know the answer to this question, DAMN RIGHT they would. There are people throughout New England that would give their right arm to go to a Sox game this season (me included) and if there were enough seats to accomodate that every one of them, we would show up for the good games (the Rays and the Yanks) and the bad games, you know when the Orioles come in to town.

This city is die-hard through and through. It goes Red Sox (sellout every game,) Patriots (sellout every game), Celtics (sellout every game-when they are good) and the Bruins...well maybe we should leave them off the list. We stand by our teams during the ups and the downs. Sure we scream profanities at them during the downs, but hey at least we're still at the stadium.

Cheers to another sellout tonight and here's wondering if the 2nd place Rays will sellout the games against the Red Sox at the Trop next week. Maybe they will.

"After that first inning when they had us down 10-0, I think everybody in the ballpark and everybody in all of Massachusetts thought that the game was over," said Rangers manager Ron Washington, whose team had 20 hits for the second straight game.

Yes sir Mr. Washington, you are correct. Those were my sentiments exactly and that's why you may have noticed there was nothing posted about the end of this game. After a 10-run first I was comfortable switching over to the Olympics and watching as Michael Phelps broke into the record books over and over and over again. Little did I know that the Red Sox and Rangers would be doing that last night as well.

On the power of 17 hits, 4 home-runs and 19 runs the Red Sox outlasted the Rangers in one of the greatest shows on Earth, Boston Red Sox baseball in late summer. Youklis' 2nd dinger of the night came at an opportune time when the Red Sox needed it the most, the eighth inning, down by a run. K-Youk's three run blast sent Fenway Park into a frenzy and left the Rangers to hang their heads and wonder how they squandered what could've been the greatest comeback against a Red Sox team in history.

In all, the game saw 37 hits, 11 doubles, 5 home runs and 36 runs. And when all the dust settled the Red Sox were left standing, Hideki Okajima got the win and Jonathon Papelbon got the save.

At times, it feels like the Boston Red Sox will never catch the Tampa Bay Rays in the hunt for first place in the AL East. To some degree, it doesn’t really matter, as long as the Red Sox keep their spot atop the chase for the wild card with a two game lead over the Minnesota Twins through the end of the season. But, wouldn’t it be nice for them to finish the season as the AL East champs and to see the New York Yankees miss the playoffs?

I might be the only one that turns on my TV every morning after a Red Sox win, wishing and hoping that the Rays somehow dropped a game the night before so we could pick up a game. I will even sit in front of ESPN praying for an off night for the Rays so we can pick up ½ a game, anything to make the race for first place, actually seem like a race. Somehow though, it always seems that when we win, they win and when we lose, they lose (although sometimes they win and that’s even worse.)

Will this struggle to pick up a couple of games on the Rays ever end? I think it will and here is why. The Rays have 49 games left to play, 30 of which take place away from the Trop. The Rays road record this season is a pitiful 23-28 (almost as bad as the Red Sox) and with just 19 games left on the schedule at Tropicana Field where they are 45-17, it’s a tough road to travel for the Rays.

The Red Sox on the other hand have a pretty even road v. home schedule for the rest of the season. They play 25 games at Fenway Park and 22 games on the road. The Sox record virtually mirrors that of the Rays as they are 40-16 at the Fens and 26-33 on the road.

So the schedule certainly favors the Red Sox, but wait, there is one more kink in the plan to get the Sox to the top, head to head play. The two teams have six games left against each other, three in Tampa and three in Boston, so that pretty much evens the playing field.

Scheduling aside, what the season will come down to is experience and the Boston Red Sox clearly have the edge when it comes to veteran leadership and September baseball experience. However, let us not forget that in 2007, during their World Series run, two of the biggest
contributors to the Red Sox success were two rookies, Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury. Could this be the year that Evan Longoria puts his stamp on the MLB?

Will the Red Sox catch the Rays? The answer is, a tentative yes. The Red Sox bats have returned and their pitching will come around. Eventually the young arms on the Rays pitching staff will wear out and they will slowly fade into contention for the wild card and lose in the first round of the playoffs. And then, there are the Yankees who are playing for third place, trying to fight off a deadly Baltimore team.

A 1-0 loss, mid-season at Fenway Park, not typically a heart breaker, but this one definately was. This had the makings of a classic, with Papi returning on a Friday night at Fenway against the hated New York Yankees, but it was not meant to be.

I was trying to think how I would hype this series if I was doing the introductions for Fox Sports, because I know they’ll have some extravagant package complete with the Pedro Martinez/Don Zimmer throwdown, the Varitek/A-Rod fight and probably for good measure they’ll throw in the Aaron Boone home-run, just to be pricks. So, how would I open the series? Probably something like this.

“It’s the battle for #2. The most storied rivalry in sports history writes a new chapter on this July night at Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox, winners of two championships in the last four years. The New York Yankees, winless in October since signing A-Rod. This time it’s for all the marbles, (ok, well not even close to all the marbles, they are battling for second place, but you get my drift.) With the return of Big Papi the Boston Red Sox look to hang the Yankees out to dry and build on their three game lead in the East while putting the Devil Rays in their rear view mirror. It’s America’s pastime at it’s best, Fox Sports presents Yankees baseb…errr…Major League Baseball on Fox.”

Sidebar here: You gotta kind of feel bad for the Rays. I know I know, they are tied with the Red Sox for 1st in the AL East, why are wee feeling bad for them? It’s simple really, nobody cares. Nobody. Not you, not me, not ESPN, nobody cares. They are playing games this weekend too and not one person cares. I’ll feel better about them when they are solidly in third or fourth place, you know, after this weekend.

Speaking of this weekend, I am boldly predicting a sweep. I know the Red Sox have been faltering a bit coming out of the All-Star Break and the Yankees have been red hot, winning six in a row, but let me lay out the facts for a Boston sweep.

1.) Big Papi is back. The crowd is gonna be hyped and he’s been tearing the cover off the ball in his rehab starts, talk about an emotional lift. I think he goes, 6-9 this weekend with 2 HR and 7 RBI’s. (Now it’s in writing I am screwed)

2.) Home Sweet Home. The Sox are back at Friendly Fenway after a loooooooong west coast road trip. I am not even talking about the length of time, I am just talking about the exhaustion they must be feeling after some grueling games with the Angels and it takes quite a lot out of you to sweep any team.

3.) It’s the Yankees…please, like we aren’t going to be amped for this series? If we sweep, the Yankees are 6 games behind us and we’re ready to really start the second half of the season. Terry Francona is rocking back and forth in the dugout at Fenway ready for the game to start and I can assume right now that Tek is eating his Cocoa Crispies with his pads on ready to go.

Saturday: 3:55p on FOX
Sunday: 8:05p on ESPN

Dice-K (11-1) went 7 1/3 with some help from the human hitting clinic JD Drew (1 HR 3 RBI) and the boys put themselves in position to hand Bucholtz the ball for the sweep. Sox will try to do just that Wednesday at 4:40 pm est. Then it is home sweet home to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the AL East. Friday at Fenway will be special with the return of Big Papi. How is that wrist? We shall see. Get your brooms out for the Safeco sweep!

Because the city we all know and love "GETS IT" the Boston Red Sox have invited the Boston Celtics to throw out the first pitch at tonights game against the Cards. It seems like it was only yesterday that KG threw out the first pitch and I think in light of that memory, we could all stand to relive it. Kevin Garnett is the Barack Obama of the Boston Celtics, he brought HOPE back to the Gahden. (that one is for you Timmy.)

I don't think it surprises anyone that the Pistons are a good team, but it certainly has surprised me at how good they are. It seems as though everyone that touches the ball for the Pistons is a playmaker. Sure, the Celtics had a better record then the Pistons this year, not by much (Pistons were 59-23 and the Celts were 66-16) and certainly the talent on this Detroit team is even better then their record suggests. So imagine my surprise when we jumped out to a nice early 8 point lead. A cake walk again at home? Well not so fast.

The first quarter of this game was one of ups and downs. The Celts went on a run, the Pistons went on a run and back and forth we went until the buzzer sounded and the end of half score is Celtics 41 Pistons 40.

As a side note, this is why Boston is the City of Champions. As we are watching the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals, the commentators are also mentioning how they were at Fenway Park last night for Jon Lester's no-hitter. This stuff doesn't happen in New York or LA. THIS is the City of Champions and we prove it night in and night out. I LOVE IT!

Back to the game and for me the headline of the half was Ray Allen. No he hasn't lit it up like everyone had hoped tonight, but he has become more agressive. He has taken the ball to the hole and knocked down a few, including a very pretty finger roll down the middle of the lane and Allen has also driven the lane and kicked it out creating for his teamates. I think the media should lay off Ray Allen and let him shoot his way out of this slump. Tonight, you can feel him clawing out of it and mark my words he is going to have a break out game #2 (maybe even in the second half, more on that to come.)
