As the Statler and Waldorf of the Wicked Pissa staff continue to nurse their respective injuries, Timmy with his left knee and Rubba Shoes with his right shoulder. When the Red Sox and the Angels were set to play yet again in the ALDS most people thought it would be business as usual. The Sox have dominated the Halos over the past few seasons when it mattered most. I am not going to sit here and lie to you and say that I was not one of those people, I was thinking that the teams were more evenly matched this season, but none the less the Sox were going to win. Well the day has to come when you no longer have someones number, it happens in every sport (Pats vs Colts is the first that comes to mind) and for the Red Sox it has now happened in back to back seasons. The Tampa Bay Rays lost the "Devil" in their name and then lost the jinx against the Sox and bounced them out in the ALCS.

Jason Varitek was not behind the plate last night in the Red Sox 10-9 win over the Toronto Blue Jays and yet all was right with the world, well almost all. The buzz this morning is over Josh Beckett's performance and the 7 runs he gave up. What, he's not allowed to have a bad start?

The trade deadline has come and gone and if you were subscribed to our ATOS feed you would know that the Boston Red Sox made some nice moves with the last minute manuvering of one Theo Epstein.

In his last minute moves, Theo made two plays that will position the slumping Red Sox nicely moving forward for a playoff push. Nostradumbass got it half right when he said that Victor Martinez would be in a Red Sox uniform after the trade deadline, because we got him, but instead of trading our roid rage clutch hitter Big Papi, we sent Justin Masterson, Bryan Price and left-handed pitcher Nick Hagadone to Cleveland. Martinez will spend his time giving Jason Varitek a breather and can be used at 1st base as well.

In another move that gives the Sox more go-to room on the bench, Theo dealt Adam LaRoche to Atlanta for Casey Kotchman. This move undoubtedly will be good when the Red Sox are playing October baseball!!

...to like Youuuuuuuuuk. The guy who comes to the ballpark everyday, does his job and is so fired up that from time to time his teamates have to help him cool off. Swing at an errant pitch? Bang your head against the bat. Strikeout? There's hell to pay for everyone with the last name Youklis on the back of his jersey.

Kevin Youklis is the type of guy that Bostonians love. He's a guy that comes to the ballpark everyday ready to do his job and never complains. He's not in it for the women. He's not in it for the fame. He's not in it for the salary. He's in it to play baseball and to be damn good at baseball.

That's why when I came across the story today about Youk and his arbitration negotiations I found another reason to like this guy. His agent, YES his AGENT said, "Kevin is perfectly content to do it one year at a time."

That's right in a day and age when a guy gets one MVP vote and he wants to get locked up for fifteen seasons, Youk, a guy who came in third in the voting is happy to take it one season at a time. God bless this guy. Youk represents the kind of guys we like on our teams. Hard working. Dedicated. And out for the team. The kind of guy like Tom Brady who took a pay cut to bring Randy in. The type of guy like Jason Varitek should be to take what will probably be a crappy offer from the Sox to retire in the Red and white.

Thank you Kevin. The nation stands and applauds you and we're rooting for you to get a 10 year deal.

Unfortunately I am a fan that roots with my heart and not with my mind. I didn't want to see Pedro go after the '04 season, obviously a good move. I didn't want to see the Pats let Willie McGinest go, obviously a good move. So, now that Jason Varitek has filed for free agency and the Red Sox only have a 15-day window to sign him, I don't want him to go, but I might be thinking with my heart again.

Tek's numbers this season were obviously terrible and his post season production was less then stellar, but there's just something about him that I think is the glue to the Boston Red Sox. I don't think Tek is a guy you can expect to be an offensive powerhouse, but he certainly is a guy you can rely on to keep your pitchers strong through seven innings and call an incredible game behind the plate.So, what is Sir Theo to do? I think I know what he'll do, he's probably going to let Tek go. I don't think after the season he had that the Red Sox could even justify signing him, but they should. The things Tek brings to the organization will never show up on a stat sheet, but they are the invaluable pieces to us putting together another run at a title in '09 and beyond.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Tek got divorced this year and had a tough year personally. Don't think that affected him on the field? Think again. Even Curt Schilling referenced it in an interview with EEI earlier this year. Tek had a tough year. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and resign him. If he gets hurt, we've always got Kevin Cash!! Hahaha!!

Well, it wouldn't be an ALCS for the Boston Red Sox if they weren't down and "out" or should I say, ALMOST out. 48 hours ago the Red Sox were just a few outs away from being eliminated from the ALCS and playing SKINS against the Yankees, but they battled back and are now staring down the barrel of a game 7.

Jason Varitek's game winning homerun came in the best case scenario. With the game tied at two in the sixth, Tek picked a very opportune time to swing for the fences and put the Red Sox up 3-2. It was perfect timing by the captain.So what was the actual story of this game? The Boston bullpen was lights out, pitching four innings of no-hit ball. Okajima pitched two very solid innings, Masterson took care of the eighth and the best closer in the history of the MLB, Papelbon closed out the ninth with his usual fire.

The Boston Red Sox are on the brink of yet another ALCS comeback. Whatever happens tomorrow night, the Red Sox have proven they have a bigger heart then any team in the MLB. The Red Sox have won nine straight elimination games in the ALCS. Now, they just need to do it one more time. I guess the DVR will have to take care of the Amazing Race for me tomorrow night, all eyes on the Carton tomorrow night for Red Sox nation.

After a long two weeks of nothing but team unity (Team USA) that is, tonight it was back to hometown pride and routing for the Red Sox and Patriots...not that I ever stopped routing for the home team, but for a couple of weeks the entire country was the hometeam.

So, tonight I sat down to watch two of my favorite teams, the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. What a night, right? Flipping between baseball and football while enjoying a brew and relaxing after a long week of work, it really doesn't get any better.

Let me start with the good. After a day off, the Red Sox finally got into the winning ways in Toronto as they dropped the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-4. On the bats of Jason Varitek and Dustin Pedroia who each sent one out of the Rogers Center, the Red Sox grabbed a much needed win.

For his part, Paul Byrd looked solid and finished with a line of 6 innings, 6 hits, 4 runs and 4 SO's.

Was this a must win for the Red Sox? No. Was it a nice win to get? You better believe it. With the Rays looking back and laughing at the rest of the pack, now would be as good a time as any to make a run at the top spot in the AL East.

And so then, what about the woeful New England Patritos? That's right I just spoke about our beloved Patriots and called them woeful. Let me put it out there right now, this dreaful start that the Patriots are having is NOT a result of Tom Brady not being in the starting line-up. Sure it hurts the team, but Tom Brady has nothing to do with giving up TWO special teams touchdowns. He has nothing to do with Donovan McNabb throwing for 180 yards and a touchdown.

Of course, Tom Brady's absence did have something to do with the disasterous play of the offense, but it wasn't the only thing. Is Matt Cassel still on the team? Aparently he is going to be for a while, given that he played a majority of the game. Gutierrez looks like the odds on favorite to be Brady's back-up this year especially after his "decent" showing tonight, 12-16, 199 yds. and two TDs. And Kevin O'Connell was no where to be found tonight, not sure what that's about, but I am sure Coach Belichick will not characterize that move at all.

Overall, it was another poor performance from a team that is the odds on favorite to win the Super Bowl this year. I'm not sure I would book my tickets to Tampa just yet, let's give them a couple of series with Brady under center to see what happens.

I was trying to think how I would hype this series if I was doing the introductions for Fox Sports, because I know they’ll have some extravagant package complete with the Pedro Martinez/Don Zimmer throwdown, the Varitek/A-Rod fight and probably for good measure they’ll throw in the Aaron Boone home-run, just to be pricks. So, how would I open the series? Probably something like this.

“It’s the battle for #2. The most storied rivalry in sports history writes a new chapter on this July night at Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox, winners of two championships in the last four years. The New York Yankees, winless in October since signing A-Rod. This time it’s for all the marbles, (ok, well not even close to all the marbles, they are battling for second place, but you get my drift.) With the return of Big Papi the Boston Red Sox look to hang the Yankees out to dry and build on their three game lead in the East while putting the Devil Rays in their rear view mirror. It’s America’s pastime at it’s best, Fox Sports presents Yankees baseb…errr…Major League Baseball on Fox.”

Sidebar here: You gotta kind of feel bad for the Rays. I know I know, they are tied with the Red Sox for 1st in the AL East, why are wee feeling bad for them? It’s simple really, nobody cares. Nobody. Not you, not me, not ESPN, nobody cares. They are playing games this weekend too and not one person cares. I’ll feel better about them when they are solidly in third or fourth place, you know, after this weekend.

Speaking of this weekend, I am boldly predicting a sweep. I know the Red Sox have been faltering a bit coming out of the All-Star Break and the Yankees have been red hot, winning six in a row, but let me lay out the facts for a Boston sweep.

1.) Big Papi is back. The crowd is gonna be hyped and he’s been tearing the cover off the ball in his rehab starts, talk about an emotional lift. I think he goes, 6-9 this weekend with 2 HR and 7 RBI’s. (Now it’s in writing I am screwed)

2.) Home Sweet Home. The Sox are back at Friendly Fenway after a loooooooong west coast road trip. I am not even talking about the length of time, I am just talking about the exhaustion they must be feeling after some grueling games with the Angels and it takes quite a lot out of you to sweep any team.

3.) It’s the Yankees…please, like we aren’t going to be amped for this series? If we sweep, the Yankees are 6 games behind us and we’re ready to really start the second half of the season. Terry Francona is rocking back and forth in the dugout at Fenway ready for the game to start and I can assume right now that Tek is eating his Cocoa Crispies with his pads on ready to go.

Jon Lester threw a no-hitter tonight. His final line, 9IP, 9 K, 2 BOB, 0 hits and 0 runs. This marks the first left-hander to throw a no-hitter in 55 years. This is also the fourth no-hitter to be caught by Tek. Jason Varitek also caught, Derek Lowe, Hideo Nomo and Clay Buckholz (last year.)
