That's right, I said it! The Red Sox are BACK and I am not backing down from that at all...well, first...maybe I should explain.Remember back in the day, back before the 2004 miracle comeback against the New York Yankees? Remember when the Boston Red Sox M.O. was to break our hearts every year and then come back to a loyal fan base the next year and expect us all to cheer as loudly as we possibly could because this might be THE year?
Those were the good old days weren't they? The time when everyone in New England (sans Southern CT because let's face it, I'm in Yankee country) commiserated over the failure of the Red Sox to get over the hump. That's when watching baseball in Boston was fun.
Then came 2004 and the miracle comeback. Then it was the sweep of the World Series which was euphoric. Then there was 2007 which was a much easier trek to the World Series and another easy win.
We were ok with the way 2008 and 2009 went down because we had those rings. The team was still fun to watch and we had a future of endless possibilities in Pedroia, Ellsbury, Dice-K...those were the days.
Then came 2010. The season of the injury for the Boston Red Sox. Now you watch a game and you never know what your gonna get, but most likely you won't get all of the big name guys you love. These days your likely to get a streaking Big Papi (good news for the Nation if they ever make a run) and a bunch of other schlubs from the minors.
So why then would I say the Boston Red Sox are back? Well, it's simple, they are back to their pre-2004 form. When the hopes and dreams of Red Sox Nation were dashed night in and night out. Remember in 2003, you would watch a game and the Red Sox would be down maybe 6-3 to the Cleveland Indians. You'd stay up to the 7th or 8th inning to see what happens and all of a sudden the offense would explode for a couple of runs. They were making a game out of it. The Indians would get out of the jam in the 8th and you still stayed with the game because you knew they were going to win it in the 9th. Someone would get a base hit with just one out and the fate was sealed, the Red Sox were going to win that game...only...THEY DIDN'T. They blew it.
Oh wait...that as last night's game.

As the Statler and Waldorf of the Wicked Pissa staff continue to nurse their respective injuries, Timmy with his left knee and Rubba Shoes with his right shoulder. The real athletes in Vancouver continue to impress and inspire all of us. Rubba Shoes is busting with anticipation over the men's hockey team and will tell you why it is appointment television, if you can find it. Tiger might have lost 17 girlfriends, but two of his favorite mimbos are back on board. Check out the guys take on his imminent return and what it means for golf. They'll also break down the Patriots pre-draft to do list and find out why it was tough to see the newest wide out in Foxboro play last year. Uncle Dukes and the BIG 3 focus on the brand new "little 4" plus prep you for the most wonderful time of the year - March Madness! Are the Sox in a position to make another deal before camp breaks? Will Big Papi still be swinging away for the local nine after the break? Why is Varitek so happy? Obvious social conquests aside (read Heidi Watney). They'll wrap with a check on the fantasy world and a tribute to the past and present olympic hockey hopefuls from an 80's movie classic. Adam and Timmy are back to put the wraps on a weekend full of disappointment. Tiger blew a 54 hole lead for the first time in 15 tries. The Red Sox blew a chance to distance themselves from the surging Rangers in the AL Wildcard race. The Pats were the lone bright spot but even that was before the weekend. Adam and Big Papi both have issues with their "laundry" which the guys will get to in due time. Thanks for checking out the show and enjoy the week ahead. "After that first inning when they had us down 10-0, I think everybody in the ballpark and everybody in all of Massachusetts thought that the game was over," said Rangers manager Ron Washington, whose team had 20 hits for the second straight game.Yes sir Mr. Washington, you are correct. Those were my sentiments exactly and that's why you may have noticed there was nothing posted about the end of this game. After a 10-run first I was comfortable switching over to the Olympics and watching as Michael Phelps broke into the record books over and over and over again. Little did I know that the Red Sox and Rangers would be doing that last night as well.
On the power of 17 hits, 4 home-runs and 19 runs the Red Sox outlasted the Rangers in one of the greatest shows on Earth, Boston Red Sox baseball in late summer. Youklis' 2nd dinger of the night came at an opportune time when the Red Sox needed it the most, the eighth inning, down by a run. K-Youk's three run blast sent Fenway Park into a frenzy and left the Rangers to hang their heads and wonder how they squandered what could've been the greatest comeback against a Red Sox team in history.
In all, the game saw 37 hits, 11 doubles, 5 home runs and 36 runs. And when all the dust settled the Red Sox were left standing, Hideki Okajima got the win and Jonathon Papelbon got the save.

Just when you thought everyone had forgotten about the "slumping" Red Sox during the oh so exciting Bejiing Olympics. It's true, with Michael Phelps on the verge of becomming the most decorated Olympian of all time and the United States leading in the medal count, it is easy to forget about the Red Sox and I almost had, until tonight.Big Papi, David Ortiz stepped to the plate twice in the first inning, both times with two runners on and both times Papi's wrist was strong enough to rip the ball over the fence. So, I guess that question has been answered.
After a 10-run explosion, there wouldn't be a no-hit bid tonight. Behind 2-2 performances by Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz in the 1st inning the Red Sox jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Since then Charlie Zink gave up two runs and the lead is now 8.
In other news from the Nation, the Red Sox have acquired right hander Paul Byrd from the Cleveland Indians. He is only 7-10 this season with a 4.53 ERA, but has gone 4-0 since the break with a 1.83 ERA, plus he was a real pain in the A$$ in the playoffs for us last year.

Well at least Manny is back in the lineup. Whether He will remain "healthy" enough to stay remains to be seen. The MRI negative. His demeanor nuetral. The outlook for the Red Sox with Manny and Papi together again, positive. Top of the 4th and Cano just took Timmy deep to center. Ugh, we are tied 2-2. More later...timmy@wickedpissadude.com

A 1-0 loss, mid-season at Fenway Park, not typically a heart breaker, but this one definately was. This had the makings of a classic, with Papi returning on a Friday night at Fenway against the hated New York Yankees, but it was not meant to be.Beckett only gave up one run, but it was on 9 hits and he didn't look sharp all night. On the other hand, Joba Chamberlain looked sharp the whole night, striking out 9 and only allowing 3 hits. It was, a classic pitchers duel and tonight our ace wasn't meant to win it.
How about the return of Papi? After getting a huge ovation at his first at bat, David Ortiz managed a single, but that was going to be it. There was even an opportunity for Papi to return to form and get a game winning hit in the 9th as he came up with nobody out, but it wasn't meant to be.
A very frustrating night all the way around and it showed when Mike Lowell struck out in the bottom of the 9th and got tossed from the game.
So the question now is, will the Yankees have an opportunity to overtake the Red Sox during this series? It is possible, but I don't think it will happen. Do you? It was pure Red Sox baseball. The Sox pulled ahead early. Gave up the lead in the middle and were on the verge of coming back in the ninth. Manny was at the plate, looking to just be Manny. There was one out, runners on 1st and 2nd, hitters count and Manny hit an infield pop up. It took two pitches to get Mikey Lowell and the rest was history.As much as it sucks that the Red Sox lost and are no longer in 1st place, I will say, this is way MLB is so exciting throughout the season. You never know what's going to happen. Last week on Wicked Pissa Dude Radio we were fired up that the Sox were in 1st place and one week later, on the verge of another Wicked Pissa Dude Radio show, the Sox are now 1 game back and the battle for first begins.
I imagine that Seattle will treat the BoSox slightly better then the City of Angels did, but who knows. With Papi on the verge of coming back to the line-up and Lowrie filling in pretty nicely for Lugo, the Sox will be fine. It just would have been nice for them to be able to split this weekend series with the Angels, but such is not the case.
As Timmy would say, we cannot win nationally televised games. My take on it is that Jeannie Glasko (I don't know how to spell her name and I hate her so much it's not even worth Googling it, so F-her) is jinxing the Red Sox and obviously Kevin Kennedy hates the Sox. The only silver lining to today's round of Fox Saturday Baseball was, NO JOE BUCK!! AMEN!!!

For the record, not sure if you saw Tito's in game interview during yesterdays game, but he is absolutley giddy to be the manager of the team and wearing a Sox jersey to the stadium.

The Celtics championship run is complete and now our attention moves to the BoSox defending their title and making sure that this year is the year that we unify the titles. They have been holding their own with Papi out, but wouldn't it be nice to have David Ortiz back? Well, it may be closer then you think. He seems to be days away from picking up a bat. PAPI!! PAPI!! PAPI!!

According to this article in the Herald, David Ortiz could be out for the season. We've said it before, we'll say it again, no big deal...right? (GULP GULP.) Now that it's for the whole season the story might be a little different. Manny to DH, Ellsbury in left and Coco in center, certainly we can beat the Devil Rays (sorry I am not calling them the Rays) with that line-up can't we? I would hope so.From the Herald:
If the Red Sox are going to repeat as world champions this season and win their third title in five years, they may have to do it without David Ortiz. After injuring his left wrist during the Red Sox’ victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night, Ortiz learned yesterday he has tendon sheath damage that will keep him sidelined indefinitely. According to a source, Ortiz’ wrist will be immobilized for roughly the next month to determine whether the injury can heal on its own. If it cannot, the Red Sox and Ortiz very well may face a harsh reality: Season-ending surgery.
Let me get this straight, because I sort of nodded off halfway through reading that. So the Red Sox are saying that Papi will likely be out a month, and others are suggesting he might need surgery that would end the season for him. The Sox might have to go the rest of the year without greatest clutch hitter in their history, you say? They could lose the most feared left handed bat in the American League, you say? They might have to make do without their emotional leader and the most respected player in the game? Yaaaawwwn. Sorry. I don't mean to be rude, it's just that this story is boring me.
There was a time when news like this would incite panic in the streets, cause a run on the banks and make it Standing Room Only on the ledges of every high rise in Boston. But that was a long time ago. When you're living in the sports mecca of the world, smack in the middle of one dynasty (the Patriots), the early stages of another (Sox) and the ascendancy of yet a third (Celtics), you don't let something like the potential loss of the city's most beloved athlete get you down. You persevere, move on, and pencil Sean Casey's .302 career BA (.351 with the Sox) into the 3-hole. The loss of Papi, for however long it lasts, is just another bump in the road for the Sox; something you overcome that makes winning all the sweeter. A challenge to add drama to their inexorable march toward Team of the Decade status. Like the thing Rocky has to overcome in every sequel (loss of Eye of the Tiger, Mick's death, punch-drunkeness, old age) losing Ortiz will just make this year's World Series Championship DVD that much more interesting.

The Celtics are in the NBA finals against the Lakers and still, the Red Sox managed to weasle a headline and this one is a pretty tough pill to swallow for the Nation. Papi will be on the DL for at least 15 days.I have talked with a few people who are worried. I am not. As Timmy pointed out earlier to me, so you move Manny to DH and let him rest for a while. You play Coco and Ellsbury and there are worse things that can happen. Yes, you lose the 1-2 punch in your order, but you still have a pretty nasty offensive machine and wouldn't we rather have this happen in August then October.
Get Well Soon Papi.

For the record Manny hit #503 tonight and it wasn't enough because the Sox lost 6-3, if only they had Papi's bat!! ;)

Well...It wasn't pretty and it took a non-save opportunity for Pap to get it done, but the Sox played like the Celtics at home and won their third straight against the last place Brew-crew. So Tony Gwynn Jr. you've been PAP-SMEARED!! I love it.Papi is hitting his stride in a big way with two bombs today and a double for 4 RBI's on the day. Pedroia or Pedroier if you're Jerry Remy went 3-4 with a homer and 2 RBI's and YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUK had a deep ball over the monstah too. Good series for the home 9. Final score 11-7.
There's nothing I like more then a clean sweep at home for the Sox, but am I the only one a little concerned about Beckett? He only gave up 6 hits today, but that lead to 6 runs. He also gave up 4 dingers which has me a little concerned. All of this has lead to some in the media asking Dice-K if he is the ace of the Red Sox staff and Dice could only shake his head and laugh. Laugh all you want, but we might ride his dice-ness to the promise land once again this season.

On to the C's or should I say, Paul Pierce's Celtics. Pierce has put the Celts on his back today and has grabbed 26 points. He got a little shaken up at the end of the half, but he'll be back strong in the second half. More then that though, his defense on Lebron has been NASTY. Lebron is scoring, but nobody else on the Cavs is and that is a testament to the rest of the Celtics team.
Here's another note, they are doing their T-Mobile Fav Fives during the halftime show and one of their favorite plays of the playoffs so far was Lebron's dunk that people are calling one of the greatest dunks ever in the history of the NBA. This is exhausting to me, because it wasn't that great. Yes. It was a good dunk, but it wasn't one of the best of all time. Besides, who really cares if it was, it means nothing if the Cavs don't win today, even Lebron would tell you that.
