Questions Fly: Patriots Draft Devin McCourty

If this were two years ago, Boston sports reporters would be all about Devin McCourty. In Bill We Trust was always the mantra. If the great Bill Belichick thinks this guy will get it done, then all hail King Bill and let's lace 'em up and get started on our next undefeated season. But, two years have passed and a Bill Belichick draft pick is no longer a sure bet.

Already the Boston media is all over coach about this pick and some might say rightfully so.

I make no bones about it, I am NOT a laundry guy, I am a player/coach guy. It has been hard for me over the first few weeks of the Red Sox season to watch guys who I have never seen in a Red Sox uniform come to the plate. I long for the days when I saw Tek behind the plate every night and Mike Lowell on the bag at third, that's just how I am wired.

So when it comes time to criticizing a coach who has brought us three Super Bowl rings and another Super Bowl appearence, I am hard pressed to criticize anything he does. That is why I am reserving judgement on Devin McCourty.

No, he is not the splash that the Patriots made in the 2007 off-season when they brought in Welker and Moss. He's unlikely to be a surprise superstar like Tommy Brady, but as coach said he is a solid four down guy and the Patriots need someone right now who can be a final piece to a defense that stumbled last year and could use some stability.

So, I say today, In Bill I Trust. I can't promise that I won't question the coach in the coming weeks or months, but for right now, I am going to sit here in my gray Belichick sweatshirt and let the critics criticize, I'll wait for the first snap of the season to make my judgements.

Not Gonna Say I Told You So...BUT

Last night the Boston Celtics lost their fifth game of the season, leaving them four games away from the 73-9 mark that Rasheed Wallace predicted at the beginning of the season. Doesn't look so likely right now Sheed does it?

The Celtics lost 98-97 to the Philadelphia 76ers in a game that they should've won. Who is to blame? Rasheed Wallace if you ask Frank Dell'Appa at boston.com who wrote this article about the Wallace's ejection from last nights game and he has a point.

OK, I know Rasheed has been a valuable asset the Celtics this season and will continue to be down the stretch, but this is exactly the thing that I was worried about when we signed him. He is a loose cannon and one that could go off at any time and hurt us in a tight spot.

In this case it was only a regular season game against the Sixers, but what if he gets tossed from an Eastern Conference Finals game against Lebron and the Cavs or Dwight Howard and the Magic? What then? Do we forgive and forget?

I don't like to be woah is me, but let's be real, he is who is. The Celtics are not the Patriots who took Corey Dillon and turned him into a model citizen or revived a struggling Randy Moss (until last weekend.) The Celtics are still the Celtics. They can't keep their point guard in check let alone a bad apple like Wallace.

I am not saying let's dump him, I am just saying that Doc needs to reign him in before he gets out of control. If he implodes at a crucial juncture in the season we could be S.O.L. and everyone knows this is probably our last shot at a 18th ring.

    Episode 136 - Lackey Luster

No...we're not talking about Randy Moss' performance during Sunday's game against the Panthers, but rather the Red Sox signing John Lackey...is it done yet? He's here for a physical, we believe it's wrapped up.

Will Lackey be the fix the Red Sox need to compete with the Yankees?
The boys discuss this and many other aspects of the Red Sox off season moves. We'll take this time to wish Theo a Happy Hanukkah and let him know that we hope for many more spending sprees over the course of the next eight days or so...

The Pats also got back on the winning track, which has everyone, EXCEPT Randy Moss, happy. Timmy and Adam discuss whether or not things are better for the woeful Pats and whether Randy just "gave up" on the team.

Happy Hanukkah to all of our Jewish friends.

Deep Breaths: New England Patriots Lose

I am as disappointed as the next New England Patriots fan. It was not a game we HAD to have by any stretch of the imagination, but it was one that we would've REALLY LIKED to have had. Anytime you lose to the NY Jets (even though we don't really know that feeling all that well) it hurts, especially when you play like Chelmsford High School on a bad year.

First the bad news, the Patriots completely stunk up the joint today. Yes, that is the understatement of the day. Tom Brady had a terrible day under center, in the pocket, out of the pocket and just about everywhere on the field at the Meadowlands. Randy Moss was really nowhere to be found (except on that one tackle he made after a Brady int which was a great play) and with no Wes Welker, Edelman did his best impression of the WR putting up 98 yds on 8 catches, not a bad replacement for Welker (given Brady had such a horrific day.)

Yes the defense had a great first half, but they fell asleep in the second leaving the Jets to pick them apart and put up some nice drives at the opening of the half.

So, now the good. There wasn't much to chose from, but I'll give it a go. Julian Edelman looked strong putting up near-Welker numbers on the Jets defense and he would've been over 100 yds receiving had Brady not missed him a couple of times. Fred Taylor, while not stunningly strong, had a couple of great runs and had he not been splitting time with LoMo, he may have had a break out game for the Patriots.

After the 16-9 loss to the Jets, there will be a whole lot of speculation on the New England Patriots. Lots of people will say Tom Brady still doesn't "have it" back and many (I'm looking at you Nostradumbass) will say that he will never return to form. NOT TRUE. This was a bad, horrendous game from Tom Brady, but it is not the end of the Tom Brady era in New England. He was missing spots. He was overthrowing guys and under throwing guys. It was a long time ago that Tom has had a bad game, but he HAS had them. He's thrown 4 interceptions in a number of games and the sky has never fallen.

In this game, the Patriots just couldn't turn the corner. Every time you thought they might, they fell short. Even with just under 2 minutes to go, there was a glimmer of hope, but it just never materialized into anything.

This loss seems bigger then it actually is because it was against the Jets and there was a lot of talk beforehand, but it was JUST the second game of the season. So, New England Patriots fans, take a couple deep breaths, sit back and relax, because the Pats will return to form next week against Matty Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons who come into Foxboro next week.

Take a couple of deep breaths and let US do the ranting and raving for you on the Wicked Pissa Dude Podcast Weekend Wrap-Up tomorrow.

Can't wait until tomorrow? Shoot us an e-mail and we'll read your rant on the show tomorrow. Lay it on us.

New England Patriots Training Sweat Box

With temperatures hitting the mid-90's for the third straight day, the New England Patriots training camp is turning into a sweat-fest. Being in full pads yesterday and again today, Tom Brady and company MUST be burning up right now.

Often on the blog and show we start to trash the professional athletes we love because either they are SUCKING (see: Boston Red Sox) or they are whining about one thing or another. So, I wanted to take a moment out and praise these guys for the hard work and dedication they are showing this week and throughout training camp.

Now, I know, they get paid millions and millions of dollars to play a kids game, but I still think it is absolutely remarkable that they put on a ton of pads and go hit the crap out of each other in this heat.

As I sit here typing this, I am in my underwear (you're welcome) and I still can't get cool. All I am doing is typing and sweat is pouring off my face. Now, I am not a finely tuned professional athlete, BUT muscles and cardio fitness are not going to protect you from the sweltering heat that is New England in mid-August.

So here's to you Tom Brady. Here's to you Logan Mankins. Here's to you Randy Moss. Here's to you Tedy Bruschi. And to the rest of the New England Patriots who are battling this heat to get ready to be a finely tuned machine come opening night. We appreciate it.

    Hall - a luxury we can't afford...

In another brilliant move that will surely add to the legacy of the gunslinger Al Davis, he has knee jerked DeAngelo Hall out of Oakland. Hmmm, a stud position player that underperformed in the managerial quagmire known as the Oakland Raiders. Sound familiar? Thanks Al, we need to firm up the secondary here in New England. The counterpoint is of course that he would not fit in here, he is not a "Patriots kinda guy." Really? Corey Dillon, um, Randy Moss, sound familiar? But he is a Michael Vick sympathizer. But he has been underwhelming since his fresh start in Oakland. Fresh start in Oakland, is there such a thing? We can't afford to not take a long look at this guy. I as a BC fan, was unfortunately on the receiving end of a great deal of his stellar play as a defensive back for VA Tech. The balance of his contract would be a rent anyway. Let The Matt Cassel Era Begin

Love him or hate him, Matt Cassel is the new quarterback for the New England Patriots. With Tom Brady out for the season, you may be forced to love him or root for another team (SACRILIGE!) Matt Cassel is our quarterback. Matt Cassel is our quarterback. Matt Cassel is our quarterback. I have to say it over and over again to make myself believe that this actually happened. Trust me, I will be on board with Matt Cassel 100% after his first play from scrimmage on Sunday, you know, if he doesn’t fumble the snap or throw a pick.

There has been a lot of discussion in the last few days of what a Matt Cassel run offense looks like. Timmy shared his feelings on whether or not we should become a running team during Wicked Pissa Dude Radio (if you missed it, subscribe for free in the player to the right…cheap plug) needless to say, he’s against it and I am inclined to agree.

We didn’t become a record setting offense last year solely on the arm of Tom Brady. Yes, he was a key component to the amazing successes that the team had, but he was not the only factor. I think you may have heard of a guy named Randy Moss? Maybe a guy named Wes Welker? Just two of the many other factors that contributed to what almost was the greatest season in the history of the NFL.

    F-U GIANTS!!

So on Sunday, Matt Cassel will get under center and put his arm and probably more important his mind to the test. Coach Belichick has said that the offense will not be watered down for Cassel and believe what you will, but I will take him on his word. There are a number of really terrible backup quarterbacks in the NFL, but I am willing to bet (ok not money, I don’t bet on the Patriots) that Matt Cassel is one of the quality ones.

Why? I have to trust Scott Piolli and Bill Belichick and their scouting of him. They have watched Cassel for four years now and obviously see something they like in him. He will become the leader that the Patriots need and if not him, I believe Randy will step up to the challenge and lead this team to victory on Sunday and throughout the season.
