I know this is a Boston sports blog, but this is THE story of the day and anybody that knows me, knows that I cannot keep my mouth shut when I have an opinion on something, so here goes.Mr. Favre, I write this with all due respect. I don’t typically bestow praise on players from teams that are not affiliated with Boston, so it takes a lot for me to say that you are by far one of the greatest players to have ever played the game of football. Not only that, you seem to be one of the nicest and most genuine people to play the game as well (although we have not met.) So, it is with a heavy heart that I say, Mr. Favre, please HANG ‘EM UP.
You have given Cheese heads sixteen very memorable seasons and have delighted fans both young and old with your talents and flare for the spectacular. You even earned the respect of this Patriots fan when you beat my team in the Super Bowl. You have recorded some of the most insane numbers in the history of professional sports included racking up some impressive records for most touchdown passes (422), most passing yards (61,655), most career completions (5,377) and most career attempts (8,758.)
Not only do you hold these and other records, but you have also proven to be one of the most reliable quarterbacks in the history of the game, playing in an NFL best 253 consecutive starts. You also have the most career wins for a starting quarterback. And I am not even done yet, because you have won the NFL MVP award three times, more then any other player in the
history of the game.Mr. Favre, these numbers, and the indelible mark you have left on football fans throughout the nation and around the world, are your legacy. So, please, I say to you, Hang ‘Em Up. Go out with your head held high, knowing that last year was a spectacular run that may not be duplicated again and most definitely won’t be duplicated with the Pack.
Dragging this out for much longer will only sully your reputation and force fans and pundits alike (not that the pundits matter) to focus on your battle with the Green Bay Packers trying to extend your career as the one thing that is mentioned when your name is brought up. You don’t want to be remembered as, a great quarterback who didn’t know when it was time to call it quits.
Now, far be it for me to tell someone with a passion for playing football to hang ‘em up, because I know what it’s like to have a passion for something (chocolate covered strawberries in my case…ok maybe not, it’s radio,) but I hope that when I am still on the microphone screaming at Timmy about who the Pats should pick up in the 2056 draft and I am using a bed pan, someone will have the presence of mind to ask me gently to call it quits.

Great article on Boston.com today about ranking our championships (yes I'll say our championships because I am certainly the sixth, 10th, 275th man, whatever you want to call me, I am part of the team...where are my rings? DAMMIT!!) Anway, the article took the six championships the city of Boston sports teams have won over the last decade and ranked them in order of importance. Every one of them is special in it's own right, but you know you have your favorite and I do too.My list.
1.) '08 Celtics - This is a tough one for me, because probably every other person in Boston will pick the '04 Sox, but to me this one is special, because I have always been a C's fan first and the last ring they got was during my "formative" years when my dad and I watched every game together.
2.) '04 Sox - Of course this is no doubt the bigger of the two Sox rings and pretty close to the top of my list as well, but it only falls to #2 because of the above mentioned reasons.
3.) '01 Pats - Remember back when the Patriots were underdogs? When nobody thought they could win? When Mumbles didn't even mention the parade until a couple of days after their victory in the Super Bowl? The times were innocent back then. No spygate. No Harrison on roids...we were just young kids playing ball.
4.) '04 Pats - This was my favorite Patriots team for a lot of reason, not the least of which was Corey Dillon. I love to see a guy who has gotten a bad rap his whole career come back with avengence and prove to the world that it in fact was wrong.
5.) '07 Sox - Great team to watch. There wasn't quite as much drama in them winning this ring and sad as it is to say, they were expected to win and somehow that makes it a little less enjoyable.
6.) '03 Pats - The first of back to back rings is always fun and considering the way we got there, this was a fun one, so I don't know why this falls to the bottom of the list, but I am sure MVP TFB will understand.
Great idea for an article by Chad at Boston.com. Read his list here.
Make your own list and either comment it or shoot it to us on e-mail. We'll read some of them tonight on Wicked Pissa Dude Radio. wickedpissadude@gmail.com
Talk to you tonight!!
