    Derby 2009 : Sloppy Seconds

Well, I almost picked the winner. Pioneerof the Nile came in second and long shot Mine that Bird came out of nowhere to win the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby. I don't think the jockey riding Pioneerof the Nile knew that Mine that Bird was coming. He thought he had everyone where he wanted them, and all of a sudden Mine that Bird came up on the inside and at full speed. Once he got past Pioneerof the Nile, there was no way he could catch him. Jockey, Calvin Borel who rode Street Sense to a Derby win in 2007, took just about the same path to victory.

Now that people are aware of Mine that Bird, I don't think he will be able to win the Triple Crown. I would love to see it, I am old enough, but I have not witnessed a Triple Crown winner with my own eyes. I have watched every Triple Crown race since 1987. There have been 9 horses to win both the Derby and the Preakness, but couldn't complete the Triple Crown. There have been rumors of them moving the Belmont out one more week to give horses more rest, but that wouldn't make the Triple Crown pure. It takes a great horse to win the Triple Crown, if you mess with the way they have been run, then it lessens it. There is a reason why the races are set up the way they are. I am sure that corporate America would love to see a Triple Crown winner, and would do whatever it takes to have one. It would tarnish the accomplishment. Leave it the way it is, and a true great horse will one day, win the whole thing.

I'm Rubba Shoes Corey, See you on the Fringe.
