On the Fence: Damon With a B

By now you've heard about the possibility that Johnny Damon may be returning to the Bean for another stint with the Boston Red Sox. The Sox picked him up off of waivers and while Damon has a no trade clause in his contract (one that specifically designates the Boston Red Sox as a team he cannot be traded to) the two sides are trying to work out a deal.

I am on the fence about these shenanigans.

On one hand, this adds a new wrinkle to the 2010 Boston Red Sox. It gives us something else to make the final six weeks of a tough season even more interesting. It could make the team more competitive, like adding P.J. Brown to the '08 Boston Celtics roster. The only difference is the history of course with Mr. Damon.

Would Johnny Damon help this Red Sox team make a push for the playoffs? I think he probably would. Could he be the puzzle piece to take Jacoby Ellsbury's spot in the lineup? Maybe. Does he still have enough juice in his legs to get around the bases and make some plays in the outfield? Yes, probably.

So from that perspective, I think the move would be great.

On the other hand, he is a BUM!! He blew off the Red Sox who seemingly gave him a decent contract and an opportunity to build something special only to go the hated New York Yankees. You don't move from one franchise to another in a heated rivalry like that. Go to the Tigers, FINE. Go to the Orioles, OK. Go to the Rays, I don't care. But to the Yankees? I don't f-ing think so.

Johnny Damon is a traitor through and through. He is a guy that chased the money and the fame and where is he now for it? He's no better for it. Take him, in comparison to a guy like David Ortiz. Ortiz has been the darling of this city, playing for a salary that is, quite frankly beneath him. He has struggled and the media has ridden him, HARD, but he still wants to stay in Boston. He wants to finish his career here and show the fans of Boston that he still can win and do it in style. There have been bumps in the road, but none that have been insurmountable.

Damon on the other hand, took the money and run, so to speak.

Johnny Damon is no better then Roger Clemens in my book and he should stay where he belongs...OUT OF A RED SOX UNIFORM!!

It's Not Over Until It's Ov...

On Friday night I headed into the Big Apple to help celebrate a good friend of mine's 30th birthday. It was going to be a really special night with a whole lot of good friends, good drinks and great music. We were going to relax and enjoy each other's company and then something happened that ruined my night...

My phone buzzed once, the score was Blue Jays 2 Red Sox 0. Bummer the Red Sox were losing, but it was only the second inning.

My phone buzzed a second time...they were losing by 5. Deep breaths...deep breaths.

My phone buzzed a third time...

Then a fourth time...

Until finally the agony was over and the Boston Red Sox had lost 16-2. I could barely see straight to read the numbers on my phone. 16-2 to the BLUE JAYS?!??!?!?

I looked over at my friend, with a frown on my face and reported, "Time of death...10:30p Friday August 20th."

He looked at me puzzled. I said, "the Red Sox just lost to the Blue Jays 16-2, I think it's a safe bet that the season is over."

I know that since then the Red Sox have picked up two wins, but guess what, so have the Tampa Bay Rays. It's not looking pretty for this rag tag group of second stringers. They made a nice run, but they let too many opportunities slip through their hands while the Rays capitalized on every opportunity.

I hope I am wrong, I truly do, but I just don't see a comeback in the future for this team. My how a week can change my mind...

So, here's to you 2010 Boston Red Sox, you gave a valiant effort in the face of truly insurmountable adversity. You are to be celebrated and revered as a team that never gave up, but I for one think it's time to think about next year.

It's an annual tradition in Boston, when the Fenway Faithful come out in HUGE numbers to support the work that the Jimmy Fund does all year long. I'm talking about the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Telethon.

Each year celebrities, athletes and every day Bostonians come out to support an incredible cause and have a great day. The telethon is now live on WEEI and will continue throughout the day and into the evening during Red Sox coverage on NESN.

5 Reasons for a Red Sox Comeback

Time is stretching thin for the Boston Red Sox to make a real comeback of any sort in the final six weeks of the season, but being the optimistic nut job who didn't count the Celtics out at the end of the regular season this past year, I am weighing in as an ardent supporter of the Sox making a final run here in the last weeks.

There are a number of things that make me believe that this is possible. Here are five of them.

1.) Pedey is back. While one player a team does not make, Dustin Pedroia is the heart and soul of the Boston Red Sox and even though in his absence they still were respectably above 500, with him back in the lineup you just get a sense that there is more fight in them then you've seen since his injury.

2.) Starting pitching is strong. Starting pitching on this team hasn't been on point all season, with injuries and some rocky outings from John Lackey and Dice-K, but the rotation seems to have gelled here in the last month or so and appears to be primed to make a run at it. Now if we could get the bullpen in order, we might be talking a ring.

3.) The bullpen. Wait...what...you just said if we can get the bullpen in order we would be in better shape, now you're telling me they are going to help us get to October? Here is where my optimism comes in. First of all, I don't envision Jonathon Papelbon having any more implosions like he did in Toronto. I think he will steady the ship and he will be ready to go for a final run. The rest of the bullpen has been mediocre at best, but traditionally they pitch better when Pap is on his game. This is a shaky one, but I am erring on the side of positivity here.

4.) The Rays will falter. You know the Tampa Bay Rays are going to stumble down the stretch, they have to. They have been teetering on the edge for a while now, salvaging wins here and there and getting some lucky breaks from the Red Sox. If the Red Sox can put a string of wins together the Rays luck is bound to run out.

5.) Don't underestimate the power of the fans to power our local nine into the playoffs just so we can make some noise for the New York Yankees. There is something to be said about a team and it's fan base that can comeback from 0-3 down against their most hated rivals. I know, it was a different team, but it wasn't a different city. The fan support the Red Sox will see down the stretch should be unprecedented and when they feel it, it will lift them past the Rays and into the playoffs.

You can choose to be negative, but I am looking on the bright side and betting that I'll be right just like I was with the Celtics!!

Psyched for Football Season

For most in the Boston area the start of the New England Patriots season came last Thursday night when the team faced off in their first pre-season game against the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints (I like the way that sounds...well I don't know if I like it, but it's better then saying the Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts...isn't it?) but for us here in Southern Connecticut it has yet to sink in that football season is officially upon us. Thanks to WCVB-TV we don't get the first pre-season game on TV down here. (Sidebar: have you SEEN the Channel 5 website? Did they go back to 1999 and steal it from the old millennium? YIKES!!! Love you guys, but update that thing will you?)

Ok, back to why I am excited about football season starting.

It just really hit me while I was at lunch and listened to the weekly call-in from Coach Belichick on-demand on The Big Show (if you missed it listen here.) I love the interviews he does with The Big Show because he is typically more laid back and more easy going, he jokes with the guys and he gets a little more in depth about football then he normally does at a press conference.

I know I may be being optimistic because the season hasn't started yet, but I love the tone that the pre-season has taken this year. I know Logan Mankins is holding out and they haven't gotten a deal done with Tom Brady, but the tone seems to be one of renewal and a new found ease about the team and the way they are doing things, at least that's what I heard in the coach's voice. He seems laid back, relaxed and ready to tackle another season.

Of course, I didn't see the first pre-season game, but the highlights I have seen and what others who did see the game are writing it sounds like it was a success and the fact that the Patriots will have Wes Welker back in red, white and blue puts everyone at ease even more.

What will the outcome of the season be? We'll surely make our predictions as we get closer. For right now, it's nice to have something to be optimistic about, God knows we can't be optimistic about baseball in October.

Remember back in 2004. Remember when the Boston Red Sox were one year removed from the home run that rocked the Nation by Aar...I am not even going to put his name on this blog. Remember when the Red Sox were down 3-0 to the dreaded New York Yankees? Remember when Boston fans came to game 4 of the ALCS with signs that read BELIEVE?

Only Boston fans would have the guts to bring signs to the ballpark that read Believe. Even after all of the heartache. Even after all of the tears. Boston fans still truly did Believe in their beloved Boston Red Sox. We Believed in that band of idiots to pull off the unthinkable and they did. They pulled off the biggest comeback in professional sports history, amplified by the history between the two teams. And the rest is history...until...

THIS YEAR.

It's time once again Red Sox Nation to BELIEVE. Break out your rally caps. Grab a Boston.com sign that reads Believe and is shameless promotion for the website and start BELIEVING in this 2010 club.

It's not enough to just simply think, oh maybe they have a shot at getting the wild card, you really have to BELIEVE it in your gut. You can't just wear a rally cap and hold a sign...it doesn't work that way. In 2004, all of Red Sox Nation truly believed there was something special about that team. There was something in them that wanted to break the curse and when millions of fans are that certain about it, so too are the players.

You know the players can feel it from the stands. The belief that their fans have in them to pull off the unthinkable. Now We Must Believe.

It will take some nicely timed losses by the Tampa Bay Rays for us to pull off a nifty little comeback here at the end of the season. It will take a couple of wins on a good night for the Red Sox to pull it off, but I truly BELIEVE that they can do it. I BELIEVE that when push comes to shove, the adversity this team has faced this season will give them the strength to power through and become a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs. The Boston Red Sox are the team that NO ONE wants to face in the playoffs because we have insane starting pitching and our bats can go off on any night (hopefully they will down the stretch.)

So, are you with me? Do you BELIEVE in the 2010 Boston Red Sox?

The Boston Celtics Run on Diesel

It's official Shaquille O'Neal is a member of the 2010-2011 Boston Celtics team.

When I first heard rumors about this signing I didn't know how to feel. On one hand, I love Shaq I think he is GREAT for the game of basketball. He's a guy who loves to play the game, reaches across all demographics and is a great ambassador for the sport. On the other hand, rumors have flown that he was one of the causes of the demise of the Lakers teams he was a part of and he was also the demise more recently of the Cleveland Cavaliers team that the Celtics decimated in the playoffs last year.

So...I was on the fence.

Now I am securely over the fence and excited to see Shaq Diesel (or as I like to call him the ORIGINAL SUPERMAN) in a white and green uniform.

From a basketball perspective it will be nice to have a big man who can score other than Kevin Garnett. It will be nice for Rajon Rondo to have someone to dish the ball to who can literally just throw it down. Imagine a front court of Kevin Garnett and Glen Davis with Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal coming off the bench...it will be magical.

So, Miami, you can have your LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh pairings all day. I will take my rag tag bunch of aging superstars to the bank every time. I still love Ray Ray from downtown. Pierce off the dribble (although slightly less often then he used.) Garnett with the fade away J. Shaq with the power moves on the block. Jermaine O'Neal with...whatever Jermaine O'Neal does. Compliment that with the BEST point guard in the league and the best backup big man in the game (Glen Davis) and you've got a team that can compete.

Don't get me wrong, the road to the finals will go through Miami and it will be a tough road, but powered by a little Diesel I like our chances...let's just hope Doc can keep the mega-star mentality under control.

The Red Sox are BACK!!

That's right, I said it! The Red Sox are BACK and I am not backing down from that at all...well, first...maybe I should explain.

Remember back in the day, back before the 2004 miracle comeback against the New York Yankees? Remember when the Boston Red Sox M.O. was to break our hearts every year and then come back to a loyal fan base the next year and expect us all to cheer as loudly as we possibly could because this might be THE year?

Those were the good old days weren't they? The time when everyone in New England (sans Southern CT because let's face it, I'm in Yankee country) commiserated over the failure of the Red Sox to get over the hump. That's when watching baseball in Boston was fun.

Then came 2004 and the miracle comeback. Then it was the sweep of the World Series which was euphoric. Then there was 2007 which was a much easier trek to the World Series and another easy win.

We were ok with the way 2008 and 2009 went down because we had those rings. The team was still fun to watch and we had a future of endless possibilities in Pedroia, Ellsbury, Dice-K...those were the days.

Then came 2010. The season of the injury for the Boston Red Sox. Now you watch a game and you never know what your gonna get, but most likely you won't get all of the big name guys you love. These days your likely to get a streaking Big Papi (good news for the Nation if they ever make a run) and a bunch of other schlubs from the minors.

So why then would I say the Boston Red Sox are back? Well, it's simple, they are back to their pre-2004 form. When the hopes and dreams of Red Sox Nation were dashed night in and night out. Remember in 2003, you would watch a game and the Red Sox would be down maybe 6-3 to the Cleveland Indians. You'd stay up to the 7th or 8th inning to see what happens and all of a sudden the offense would explode for a couple of runs. They were making a game out of it. The Indians would get out of the jam in the 8th and you still stayed with the game because you knew they were going to win it in the 9th. Someone would get a base hit with just one out and the fate was sealed, the Red Sox were going to win that game...only...THEY DIDN'T. They blew it.

Oh wait...that as last night's game.

Episode 173 - Learn How To Play

The Bruins could take a lesson or four. The Red Sox could certainly benefit from a few pointers as well. The Celtics are holding court (pardon the pun) and all of the Boston teams, yes even the Patriots should be taking notes. Win, on the road, with old players, with rookies and teamwork. Remote Wars: Game On

Saturday May 1st, the stars seemed to have aligned on this day to give us potentially one of the great sports day/nights that I can remember. Lets break down the schedule shall we.

First you have the resurgent Boston Bruins at 12:30 against their outdoor rival Philadelphia Flyers in Boston to kick off their best of seven series in the second round of the NHL playoffs. GO B's

Once this has ended you have a breather for about an hour, this is where you need to either stock up, check the "honey do" list and get that prioritized to what you may be able to get accomplished in that time frame, because at around 5:25 the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby will be happening on NBC. Before being in a smoke filled room with people yelling at the hundreds of screens that show these great horses going for history, I would probably would have missed this and not even cared. Not anymore, make sure your around for the very few minutes it takes for them to go around this track as it is always exciting to watch. As an FYI they are calling for rain over in Churchill Downs so there may be a slight delay, plan accordingly.

Once the Derby is over, again there is a slight breather, check your list and make sure you are ready to entertain guests or just yourself for the next 5-6 hours of sports. Starting at 7:05 with Red Sox vs O's in Baltimore with Dice-K's first start of the season. I don't care that it is April baseball, the Sox will need Dice-K to return to form if they are going to have any shot in catching the NY Yankmees or the Rays. One start may not tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but it will be fun to watch no matter what. This of course hinders on him not tweaking his back in warm-ups...what I'm just saying.

Now 25 minutes later at 7:30 Nascars Sprint Cup at Richmond kicks off. Now the only reason I know this is my father will be over the house enjoying the festivities of this glorious evening and has already designated my bedroom big screen as his "race watching screen". It's all him.

Then we move to 8 when the Celtics tip off their second round game one with the Cleveland Cavaliers in Cleveland where apparently they are witnesses. I could write a blog about this game by itself but I will refrain from doing so right now since the games importance should speak for itself. GO GREEN!

Finally we move to 9 where the under cards of what should be the fight of the year and may set up the fight of the decade. Mayweather vs Moseley. If Mayweather wins will that finally make our dreams come true and force him to fight Manny Pacquio? God let's hope so.

In closing this Sat. evening there will be a lot of hitting the last button and going back and forth between games, I am sure that the batteries will hold up but I say again. There may not be enough alcohol for this night of great sports, regardless enjoy them with some friends and family.

Episode 170 - It Was A Good Day

It hasn't happened yet this spring, but it finally did yesterday, all the Boston sports teams were in a good place. The Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins were both on their way to the second round of the playoffs and the Boston Red Sox had won back to back games. The Patriots were idol, but who's counting.

Rubba Shoes and Adam got together to chat all things Boston sports including a little vino like Chardon-K and ZinfandEllsbury, the new charity wines from the Red Sox for this season. On that note, Rubba Shoes is making his way to the kick off party for the wines with Josh Beckett and Jacoby Ellsbury in a few weeks, we'll have all the details coming soon.

So, on this great day for Boston sports the boys ponder what is next. Who will make it through the 2nd round of the playoffs? The Bruins? The Celtics? Both? Have the Red Sox turned a corner? Will the pitching come around?

I Won't Pretend I Know...Anything

I won't pretend to know how Bruins fans feel this morning, after a disappointing post-season last year and a nearly disastrous season this year, I won't pretend to know how great it feels to finish off the Sabres in six.

I won't pretend to know how many goals the Bruins scored.

I won't pretend to know who plays goalie for the Bruins.

I won't pretend to know, really anything about the Bruins.

What I do know, is that last night's win was a big win for Bruins fans everywhere who have waited far too long to watch their B's skate to victory in a playoff series.

So, I say, congratulations to the Boston Bruins for what I have heard was a tremendous series. I won't pretend I am excited for round two, but I know a whole lot of people that are.

I won't pretend to know why Josh Beckett is struggling to find his mojo.

I won't pretend to know why the Red Sox seem to have all the fire power they need, but can't find an arm in the bullpen to hold a lead.

I won't pretend to know why Papi continues to struggle...ok well maybe that one's the roids.

I won't pretend to know if the Red Sox will ever snap out of this funk.

What I do know is that they battled back yesterday. Yes, it was against the lowly Blue Jays, but there is fight in them. This is good news for Red Sox nation who have watched this team stumble out of the gates. The good news with this team is they are hitting, so maybe Dice-K's appearance this Saturday will be the shot in the arm the pitching staff needs to get the Boston Red Sox back in the winning frame of mind.

So, I say to the Boston Red Sox, keep plugging away boys, eventually this will all work itself out. I refuse to believe that the second highest payroll in baseball has produced basement dwellers.

I won't pretend to know why Adalius Thomas didn't work out with the New England Patriots.

I won't pretend to know why he didn't fit in with an organization that usually brings players in and slides them nicely into place without a hint of a problem.

I won't pretend to know why he went from a Humble Pie eating Patriot to a defector in 2009.

I won't pretend to know why Coach Belichick seemed to treat him differently then some of the other guys on the roster.

What I do know is that we do NOT want him heading to Gang Green. The Jets are already stacked as it is and the last thing we need is another guy lined up across from Tom Brady that has a score to settle. We should've traded him by any means necessary AWAY from the New York Jets.

So, I say to the New England Patriots who have had a mediocre at best off season, GOOD LUCK fellas, you're going to need it. When the New York Jets come into town, I am not 100% it's going to be pretty. In fact I am quite sure it's going to be UGLY.

I won't pretend to know how Paul Pierce and the rest of the big three are feeling after letting a series sweep slip through their hands on Sunday against the Miami Heat.

I won't pretend to know if their aging legs are still holding up under the pressure of a long NBA season and the start of the grueling playoffs.

I won't pretend to know if Glen Davis will show up as he did in Game 2 or look like he's stuck in mud like he did in Game 4.

I won't pretend to know if Dwayne Wade can legitimately put up another set of 46 on the Celtics tonight at the Garden.

What I do know is that the Celtics have been must see TV for the last four games and nothing has changed tonight. The Garden will be rocking and the Boston Celtics need to deliver for their fans, but also for their bodies as an extra days rest before they head to the Q (let's be real, they'll be playing the Cavs) is a MUST.

So, I say to you Boston Celtics, get out there and get the job done tonight. We're counting on you to keep this positive Boston vibe going tonight.

Red's Race 5 Mile - 4.25.10

I am finally back out racing. Since the snowshoe series cancelled a few events due to not enough weather and then my left knee cancelled a few more at the end, it felt good to be wearing a bib again. This season on the asphalt started the way last season finished, with a partner.

Another one of my friends from Weight Watchers wanted to do her first road race. I told Amanda when she was ready I would be happy to run with her. She had some hesitation as the race grew closer but then decided she was ready after all. Was she ever ready! When I did my first race back in September of 2008 I merely took on a 5K (3.1 miles) and was thrilled to have completed it. Amanda should be very proud of herself, she ran a 5 mile race today and never once punched me in the face for "maintaining positive chatter" throughout the entire run. As someone once said to me before I set out on my first road race, "don't worry, you won't be last."

Sure enough Amanda pulled in at 1:00:04 which was good enough for 461st place and according to the results I was in at 1:00:34 - we were not last! It was a nice way to start the season and get back out there. I will be heading out next for the Hampton Falls 5 Mile on May 8th looking to better my time. In shocking news, the incomparable Jim Johnson won the event with a time of 25:56. Congratulations to him coming off of his amazing 76th place finish (2:30:00) at Boston last Monday. The Losers: Too Harsh?

It could've been worse, we could live in Kansas City and have started this weekend with literally nothing to look forward to. We might've been stuck going to see the movie the Losers rather than watching our teams become the losers in a couple of good games this afternoon.

From the opening tip, it wasn't meant to be a sweep. It certainly would've been nice to see the Celtics get an extra day of rest before they had to inevitably take on the Cavs after they dispose of the Chicago Bulls. But alas, it wasn't meant to be. Dwayne Wade's 46 points was just a little bit too much for the C's to handle.

Let's be real, the Celtics just weren't "there" today from the start, the reason it felt like it was a game is that the Heat are just so over matched that even a mediocre performance from the Celtics keeps them in a game. Don't get me wrong, the Celtics had glimpses of solid play and they probably should've won the game, but Dwayne Wade was way too much for a lackluster performance to overcome.

Early foul trouble took Paul Pierce and Ray Allen out of the game and they never really found their rhythm. Kevin Garnett had a solid offensive game, but he uncharacteristically missed some assignments on the defensive end. There was no fire in the belly of Glen Davis off the bench and Rasheed Wallace took quite a few ill advised shots in big spots. Even Nate Robinson got a shot to shine and he blew his opportunity to make an impact with Rondo on the bench.

Even with the lackluster play the Celtics had a shot to close out the series down the stretch, but they went 2-8 from the free throw line (including a VERY uncharacteristic 1-4 from Ray Allen.) It just wasn't meant to be.

Now the Celtics will have to close it out on the parquet at the Garden in front of a home town crowd, good for the wallets of the ownership, but not so great for the legs of the big three.

Oh ya, then there're the Red Sox who continue to stumble, even when we expected so much from them coming into the weekend against the lowly Baltimore Orioles. Pretty soon we'll be talking about the basement dwelling Red Sox. It's not looking good for our local nine. I am not one to count them out after only 19 games, but losing to the Orioles in extra innings does not really give one optimism for the upcoming summer.

Is it too harsh to call our teams Losers? Of course it is, but lose they did this weekend, but at least we had competitive sports to watch. It could be worse, we might've had to go see this this weekend...

Questions Fly: Patriots Draft Devin McCourty

If this were two years ago, Boston sports reporters would be all about Devin McCourty. In Bill We Trust was always the mantra. If the great Bill Belichick thinks this guy will get it done, then all hail King Bill and let's lace 'em up and get started on our next undefeated season. But, two years have passed and a Bill Belichick draft pick is no longer a sure bet.

Already the Boston media is all over coach about this pick and some might say rightfully so.

I make no bones about it, I am NOT a laundry guy, I am a player/coach guy. It has been hard for me over the first few weeks of the Red Sox season to watch guys who I have never seen in a Red Sox uniform come to the plate. I long for the days when I saw Tek behind the plate every night and Mike Lowell on the bag at third, that's just how I am wired.

So when it comes time to criticizing a coach who has brought us three Super Bowl rings and another Super Bowl appearence, I am hard pressed to criticize anything he does. That is why I am reserving judgement on Devin McCourty.

No, he is not the splash that the Patriots made in the 2007 off-season when they brought in Welker and Moss. He's unlikely to be a surprise superstar like Tommy Brady, but as coach said he is a solid four down guy and the Patriots need someone right now who can be a final piece to a defense that stumbled last year and could use some stability.

So, I say today, In Bill I Trust. I can't promise that I won't question the coach in the coming weeks or months, but for right now, I am going to sit here in my gray Belichick sweatshirt and let the critics criticize, I'll wait for the first snap of the season to make my judgements.

The Ticket Stub

All day Tuesday I was saying to myself "Doc needs to start Davis he just has too" though the reasoning was a bit flawed, I was telling myself this for the fact that everyone can remember who the "Ticket Stub" is and we have not seen him in awhile. It was about time to unearth Davis' alter ego. Unearth he did, 23 points 8 boards and a fire that showed the Garden faithful why they loved the "Ticket Stub" and why we needed to see him again.

KG out because of an elbow, to a guy we all would love to elbow anyway, had to sit in the clubhouse and watch what at one time was thought to be his protege start the game and go gang busters all over the Miami Heat. The game got so out of hand that I switched over to the Sox game cause a game at the Fens in APRIL was more exciting to watch than the beating the C's were doling out.

KG I am sure was smiling and maybe you will see him take Davis under his wing like he was two seasons ago. After showing that he has the talent and that playoff run last season was not as big as a fluke as most thought it was. Here is my only gripe with Davis and the "Ticket Stub". Why not bring it out all the time? Do you have to start the game to show what you are made of? Makes no sense to me, whether you are starting or coming off the bench the "Stub" should always be a part of his game.

Overall the C's got exactly what they needed out of Davis and whether we see the "Ticket Stub" on Friday in Miami when KG comes back or just the "Stub" Glen Davis was a HUGE (pun intended) reason the C's are not sitting at 2-0.

There's Something "Bruin"

The Bruins are up 2-1 over the Sabres. I am desperately trying to stave off any delusions of grandeur. But there is something going on with this team. I can't remember the last time I was excited to watch the Bruins game in order to make me feel better about the Red Sox game.

They are skating well and attacking in a way that makes me think they might be on to something. It feels good being the underdog. Ninety percent of the experts and pundits have written them off and that is good too. It seems to be Boston's modus operendi to have to overcome the odds. The Sabres have Ryan Miller, the higher seed and a great penalty killing percentage. The Bruins have a hot young goalie and nobody on their side. Marc Savard is out with a grade two concussion. Oh, but wait, now the news is breaking that he is skating again and may be back for the end of the Sabres series. If the guys can keep this going and ensure a semifinal trip that would better the chances of his return for sure. Oops, there I go again getting excited about the Bruins.

I will take my lumps as a Bruins fan and continue to enjoy whatever they may piece together for a post season run. Knowing that everyone and anyone that gets the opportunity to skate in the 2nd season has a chance to do something incredible. This is the team that won the Winter Classic at Fenway in overtime. This is the team that scored 3 shorthanded goals not only in one game but during the same penalty, an NHL record. The Bruins seem to have all the makings of the improbable and I think it would be an awesome way for the greatest sports town in the world to close out this decade. God help me for being a professional hockey optimist in Boston. Enjoy Game 4 , I know I will. Go B's.

Run Rubba Run : Day 1

Well, Ever since I was a kid, I have enjoyed running and watching the Boston Marathon. I have longed to run it, but always had an excuse not too. Well, no more excuses. As long as my body will allow me to do so, I plan on running the 115th Boston Marathon. It will be just before my 40th birthday. This will be a nice birthday present, if I complete the task.

Here on this blog, I will try to chronicle the ups and downs of training for the Boston Marathon. My friend Tim, is going to try to run also. We both will be trying to raise money for the Cameron Lindsey Foundation. Today was the official first day, I did 2 miles on the cross trainer, and a lite weight workout. The biggest problem I will have is keeping my legs from having issues. I am starting easy and hopefully, the more I do, the better they will feel. I will try to keep updating this daily. Please keep following this and see how I do. I have one year to get ready.

114th Boston Marathon

As I sit here on a gloomy Sunday, worried about the Sox, I think about the Patriots Day game and the Boston Marathon. Oh, how I long for the days of Joan Benoit Samuelson and Bill Rodgers. I still have an interest in the marathon, but it is usually a forgone conclusion that an American isn't going to win. Most of the Americans that run the Boston Marathon are not in it to win it. Most of the stories are about people who are running for a cause, or for someone, or because they have just overcome something. I love these stories, and that is why I am, and will always be interested in the marathon. In years past, I would say that one day I am going to run this. As a child, until my teen years, I had gone into town to watch the runners. Sometimes I would catch the Sox game then walk down to Kenmore Square and watch them run by. As a kid, teen and young adult, I loved running. Over the years of playing multiple sports, it gets harder and harder to do it. I am not saying that I cannot, but it gets tougher every year to get started. I believe that I still could run the marathon if I got in good shape, Don't know if the legs would agree, but still in the back of my mind, I would like to run it once, to say that I did it.

As of today, I will not be running in the 114th running of the Boston Marathon. I will be tuning in. Watching as an American will stay with the lead pack for a while, but as the leaders make the turn down Boylston St., I believe they will be out of it. Although last year Americans finished 3rd in both the men's and women's race. I don't mind that the Kenyans and Ethiopians have taken over the sport. I have gotten to know some of them over there years at the marathon. It is a big deal in their countries. They are treated like superstars, if they win. There just isn't enough money in it for the American athlete. The really good athletes make better money doing something else. Isn't that the American Dream? To make as much money as you can. I don't blame them, I would do the same thing, but there has got to be someone out there, that has a passion for running, that can make a run at this thing someday. I will root for an American to win, but mostly I will root for the thousands of people that are running this race for a greater purpose. It may take them 4 plus hours to do it, but those people will feel much better about it than the people who win. So, don't forget to carbo load, then get a good night sleep and watch out for the cross wind. The temperature should be descent for a good run, but the cross wind may not allow for a course record. And as said on Seinfeld, "You are all winners."

You Have To Endure This Because I Had To...

This morning as I sipped my cup of hot coffee in my bathrobe and slippers, I was forced to re-live October of 2008. The confetti, the smug smiles on the faces of our most hated rivals, it all came rushing back to me.

Today is Opening Day at Yankee Stadium. The Skankees will have their home opener against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and since I had to endure the details of the home opener on the news this morning, I will bore you with the details too.

Four time world champion Bernie Williams will throw out the first pitch (who I learned today was a wonderful guy and a great musician because the news anchor ran into him in a music store and he was nice to her son...NOBODY CARES!!!) Whitey Ford and Yogi Bera will be on hand to help manager Joe Girardi hand out the rings to his team.

Girardi said this is way sweeter then winning it as a player because you get to hand the rings to your teamates. Wow, a Yankee that is full of it...SHOCKING!!

There are a few Yankees on the team who have been through ring ceremonies before, Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera who will each have five rings, described as a "fist full" by the New York media.

One final note about today's ceremony, George Steinbrenner "the boss man" will be in attendence for the event which starts at 1:05p.

Now that I have made you suffer through the details like I did and now that I know you are saying exactly what I said, WHO CARES!?!?!?!? I will say to you what my wife said to me when I was done complaining about the coverage..."they'd be doing the same thing on the Boston news stations..."

Just because she's right, doesn't mean I have to like it!!

The Reasons I Will Be Watching

He is the best golfer I have ever seen and when all is said and done the best golfer ever. I have not watched a tournament since his last, and have been anxiously waiting for his return.

I downloaded the masters app this morning and cannot wait until 1:42 to get it up and running. It is not about the person to me, it is about the player. I have said in the past that I am fans of players and performers. We are not perfect and should not expect the people we root for to be perfect. I am sure that we all root and have rooted for people that have done as bad if not worse. I do not like what he did, but that is between him and his family. I want to watch him play and win. I do not expect him to win, but to be in the mix come Sunday. So if you need me this weekend, I will be on the couch watching men hit a little ball very far.

5 Reasons I WON'T Watch Tiger's Return

This afternoon marks the "triumphant" return of Tiger Woods to the PGA tour. It is a miracle he is even back, what with the broken leg he suffered just weeks ago...wait, what, he didn't suffer an injury? It is simply astonishing the mental prowess it takes for someone to return to the world of professional golf just days after the tragic death of a family member...wait, what, he didn't suffer a loss in his family?

Why is his return so triumphant?

He drank and drugged himself silly while sleeping around with 15+ hot waitresses and "dancers" cheating on his wife and two kids?

Wow!! Who could ever comeback from that?

Why is this such a big deal? He made some egregious mistakes in his personal life and now it is his chance for rendemption?

News flash, he's not going to redeem himself on the golf course. The only redemption will come at the hands of his wife, if she can find it somewhere in her heart, and she has to have a BIG heart, to forgive his infidelity.

Tiger Woods' return to golf is the return of a truly amazing athlete, but it is NOT a triumphant return to the "image" that he once had.

So why won't I be watching him tee off this afternoon?

1.) I Am NOT Curious: There will be a lot of people that tune in to the Masters who are not golf fans. On-lookers who will be curious how Tiger will react, how the fans will react, how the media will react. I can tell you already, without even watching. Tiger will be nervous and rusty - his game will not be at the level it usuaully is and his fans will be disappointed at first. The fans will cheer him (he will not be jeered.) The media will over-hype it and make it the biggest deal in the history of all sports if he hits even a remotely straight tee shot.

2.) Tiger Won't Be Tiger: If you watched golf recently, you know, before the Tiger "scandal," you were watching an athlete at the top of his game. A guy who was truly a phenomenol athlete that was racing to the front page of the history books, that was Tiger then. The Tiger you watch tee off at Augusta this afternoon will not be the same man. There will be less fire in his eyes (something he has already even admited to saying that he will tone down his outburts on the course.) He will be more subdued and quite frankly his game will be off. Why watch a once amazing athlete stumble back to mediocrity?

3.) This is NOT a Comeback Story: Everybody loves a great comeback story. It's what sports is all about. Someone gets injured and knocked out of a big game/tournament and comes limping back on to the playing surface to finish the job he/she started, everybody loves that. This is not one of those moments. Tiger left the game of golf to handle some personal business and he is returning. If I take a leave of absence from my job do people cheer me and talk about how it is the greatest comeback in real estate history? No of course they don't. Is the situation tragic and difficult? For his wife and kids it is. For Tiger, he's a big man, he made a mistake and he'll deal with it. He is not coming back from something catastrophic to his golf game. When reporters compared it to when he left the game with a bad ACL I threw up a little bit in my mouth...THAT was a comeback, this is just another tournament.

4.) It's a GOLF Tournament: I am a sports fan. I watch sportscenter and I do not turn away when they show golf highlights or Nascar highlights or even soccer highlights, I watch them all, but I am not a fan. I have NEVER sat through an entire round of golf on TV and I am not going to start today. The only LIVE golf I ever watched was the playoff that Tiger was in with his bum knee, now THAT was something to watch. This, is JUST a golf tournament.

5.) I'll Be At Work: I avoided the NCAA tournament at work and I will do the same with this. When Tiger tees off at 1:40 this afternoon I will be knee deep in TPS reports and no silly golf tournament will stop me from working on those.

East v. West: The Beef is OVAH!

Of course you wouldn't. Dr. Dre in a Red Sox uniform, in Boston? Never would've happened. You know some crazy Bad Boy Records "exec" would be at Fenway to beef with the good Dr and all hell would break loose.

The good news is, this is 2010 and it's official, the BEEF IS OVAH!!

Some believe it ended when Tupac and Biggie were killed, but truth be told I think it ended when these guys realized there was MUCH more money to be made by being a touch "friendlier" to mainstream America. Still gangsta, but gangsta chic if you will.

So, what's the point of all this? Well, Dr. Dre was in the Bean over the weekend to promote his new line of Beats headphones branded with the Red Sox logo on them. You can get them here.

Ok, yes the $400 price tag is eye popping to say the least, but I have tried a pair of these out and take it from me, a former DJ, these headphones will blow your mind...NO LIE. The sound that these headphones put out is absolutley phenomenal. Plus, when you wear them you can rock your Nation pride.

A couple other notes on Dre...his new single will be realeased in a couple of weeks, it's called "Under Pressure" and it features Jay-Z. What a Game! What a Tourney!

If there were ever a way to end the 2010 NCAA tournament it was the way Butler and Duke played it out in Mondays great game. With a last second heave from half court that had every ounce of Haywood's strength and Tar Heel Nation (read : Duke haters) behind it as well. All that emotion and hope was not enough. The dreams of hopeful sports fans everywhere and an upstart school bounced off the rim. For a moment you thought it was money, and you're not alone. A lot of people I am sure thought that it was going in. Why not, why shouldn't it drop since this years tourney saw some of the craziest upsets and wild finishes. That is what March Madness is supposed to bring. With only one number one making it to the Final Four, yet two number fives broke through as well. For the most part, the 2 seeds were in trouble throughout the tournament and the small schools such as Northern Iowa and of course Butler said to the country hey we can play some college hoops too.

Does this mean I am in favor of expanding the field as will be discussed by the NCAA this off season? No freakin way! If you expand the league you could be watering it down and these teams, these Butler teams, these George Mason teams, and all the other small schools won't be as sexy to pick during your brackets if you have 96 to choose from. Let's face it, it is all about the brackets each year. It is what makes the tourney that special few weeks that has everyone on cbssports.com ready to click the boss button on that first Thursday and then realize they don't need to once they witness their boss just had a great pick for an upset and is involved at their own desk.

I hope this tournament shows that they should keep things the way they are, the old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind. Even though the hated Blue Devils won this season it was a great game and a great tournament. Now all we have to do is wait 48 more weeks before it starts up all over again.

Now That That's Over...

Well, now that that's over we can get back to...the daily grind. I probably don't feel AS dejected as the Butler players pictured above, but it's close. Today is the Tuesday after. The day we all have to refocus at work because we've spent the last three weeks reveling in some of the best basketball this country has to offer.

You have to go back to filing TPS reports and coming in on Saturday all because the silly tournament is over.

Your water cooler talk will now turn to listening to the lady in the cube next to you talk about who went home on Dancing With The Stars.

You'll pass the guy who won your office pool in the hall with your head hung low while his wallet is bulging out of his pants and a big shit eating grin is stretched across his face. He knows he got lucky, but he doesn't care, he's RICH BITCH!!

Your buddy who had everyone over to watch the national championship game on his brand new 60' plasma will walk by you and you'll just nod at each other and look down at the ground while continuing to walk ahead all the while knowing what this Tuesday means.

There'll be no more high fives or chest bumps. There'll be no more panic buttons on your computer to close the live game streaming when your boss walks by.

Today, we return to reality. A terrible reality. One where work actually becomes work again and basketball is no longer about brackets, but about saving your superstar's legs for the playoffs.

So, today, do something for you, something that makes you smile while you think back fondly on one of the best NCAA tournaments in recent history. Just do it while getting some work done...otherwise you might get fired.

A Storied Boston Sports Weekend

Who knows what the history books will say about the 2010 Boston Celtics. Who knows what late summer has in store for the 2010 Boston Red Sox. One thing we do know though is that this past weekend felt like the City of Champions was back. If just for one warm night in early April, Boston was abuzz with the glory of a city poised to do something special.

The day started out as a pretty ordinary day. The Celtics were at the Garden hosting the toast of the league, Lebron James' Cleveland Cavaliers. For the past few years the Cavs have been the team to beat in the East and every year, they have been beaten. This year, though, will be different, according to all of the analysts. This will be the year of King James' coronation. But, that's not how it shook out yesterday.

The Celtics surged to a 22 point lead late in the third quarter only to stave off a fourth quarter surge by Lebron James and win 117-113. It was the Celtics, the team who had been around the block a few times, the team who had hung a banner or two in the rafters, the team with the most recent ring that would hang a big game on Lebron and his Cavs, serving notice that the Celtics were not going to quietly ride off into the sunset in 2010.

The win by the Celtics alone would've been enough to satisfy the appetite of a Boston sports fan that is dying for some good news these days, but the day was barely half over when a click of the remote flipped on pre-game chatter for Opening Day at Fenway Park.

The most storied rivalry in all of sports. The dreaded, New York Yankees, who came into the historic Fenway Park as World Champions, were in town to kick of the 2010 season. Many analysts have the Yankees repeating and some place the Boston Red Sox in third place so on paper, this might not have been much of a match-up, but paper means nothing when these two teams collide.

Josh Beckett on the mound vs. CC Sabathia was bound to be a pitchers duel and through three it was pretty close to that, but it all started to unravel as the Yankees jumped out to a 3-1 lead on back to back jacks off of Beckett and it looked like the pundits were right, this year the Red Sox would continue to not be a match for the Evil Empire.

But then, a resurgence. The Boston Red Sox, trailing 5-2 at the end of five innings, rallied with back to back 3 run innings to surge past the Yankees 9-7 in an Opening Day shot across the bow that served as a warning to the league that this Red Sox team would not be pushed around.

Neither win carried all that much weight in the grand scheme of the season. The greatest importance either game held was that the Celtics were jockeying for the three seed in the playoffs, but it was the spectacle of the day. A beautiful day in Boston. The sun was shining. The duck boats were out (not on parade just yet) and our beloved sports teams were winning.

It's that magical time of year between April and June or September and October when two of our most beloved teams, (the Celtics and Red Sox or the Red Sox and the Patriots) are playing on the same afternoon and the results are positive on both fields of play. It's a great feeling to have and something that very few cities ever have the opportunity to experience.

So, no matter what happens in the Celtics playoff push or the season series with the Yankees, we'll always have April 4th, 2010 as one of those special days in Boston sports where two of our teams knocked off two of "their" teams to bring home W's to our beloved city.

Shut Up and Play

Despite what this picture might suggest, this is not a blog JUST about Rasheed Wallace, although he will have a role to play in it.

The Boston Celtics avoided another embarrassing fourth quarter collapse by holding off Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers to win 117-113. This was a game the Celtics really needed and one that the Cavs probably could have cared less about and for three quarters it showed.

The Celtics put up 98 points through three quarters of play and with about 5 minutes to go in the fourth had only added 5 more points to the total. It looked like what has become an all too familiar scene for the Celtics this year was about to play out. They were about to blow a 22 point lead and drop another winnable game to a team they will NEED to beat come playoff time.

Lebron James did his King James thing and turned it on in the fourth battling to bring the Cavs back and put them up one, but the Celtics held him off and were able to pull out a much needed win.

This game though, had an under current that I, for one, did not like. It's no surprise that Kevin Garnett is a talker, but today he was jawing with Lebron James to a whole new level. The two went back and forth and clearly got under each others skin (KG got at Lebron more then the other way around.) Lebron was distracted at the free throw line and missed a handful of key free throws that could've broken the Celtics' back. He missed them and the Celtics won.

It was more then the talking between players that gets to me, it's also the constant complaining to the officials. This game saw Cleveland pick up four technicals and Mike Brown get chucked. On the Celtics' side of the ball, they received two technicals, one from Rajon Rondo and one from Rasheed Wallace who is dangerously close to getting a one game suspension.

There was even more talking then that. Rasheed Wallace started mouthing off to Doc Rivers during one stage of the game, which caught him some pine, rightfully so.

Rasheed Wallace, Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett, Lebron James, Doc Rivers, Paul Pierce...I implore you, take a cue from Ray Allen who had 33 points for the Celtics this afternoon. Ray Ray goes out and gets the job done. He keeps his mouth shut, for the most part and doesn't blame anybody else on the court for his struggles. Everyone in the league should take a cue from this guy.

The more NBA games I watch, the more I am disgusted by the attitudes of the players and how nothing seems to be their fault. They all do it and leading the charge are the superstars, Lebron, Kobe Bryant, Paul Pierce, they all do it and it is a detriment to the game.

I am not saying to never complain about a call or talk a little trash, but the extent to which the players in today's NBA talk distracts from the game and quite frankly it is entirely less effective then if you have a legitimate gripe with a call or a "real" beef with a competitor. When you're constantly complaining it loses a little luster.

Celtic Pride

Wednesday night was a night 7 years in the making. I took my 7 year old son Tyler, to his first professional sporting event. We saw the Celtics vs. the Thunder. What a night. The only thing that could have made it better was if the Celtics had won. To start the day off, I was offered tickets by one of my friends, and thought that it might be a good idea to bring my son to his first Celtic's game. I called home and asked if he wanted to go. I got the twenty questions, how long would it be, would I have fun, and so on. He couldn't make up his mind, so, because I was given these only hours before game time, I needed to move quick, in order to get someone to go with me. So, I called Timmy to let him know that I wasn't going to be able to do the podcast, and to see if he would be able to go. While I was talking to him, my wife called me back and said he was crying and really wanted to go. It was set, he was going with me.

We headed into the game, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. A calm ride in, parked under the Garden, so we didn't have to carry our jackets. Took the elevator up paid for parking, then into the pro shop. I had to keep steering him away from the Bruins gear, and kept saying,"We are going to see the Celtic's not the Bruins." That game may come next year. I asked him what player shirt he wanted, he was locked on Ray Allen. He didn't even mention anyone else. I guess this is when I should mention that he has never watched a game on TV and only knows the players, because I point them out in highlights on TV. He seemed to have Ray as his favorite. So, a shirt, hat, foam finger and key chain later, we headed into the building and to our seats.

Still, everything was calm and quiet, the focus was on getting nachos. We enjoyed nachos and a diet coke, before the game started. We stood for the national anthem, then it was time for tip off. This is when the fun began. He was bouncing out of his seat for the whole game. At halftime when a bunch of people were leaving there seats, he said, should we be leaving now. I explained that is was halftime and that we would leave after the third quarter and I would be happy he made it that far. Well, the third quarter ended and he asked if we had to leave, I asked him why, he said I think I want to stay to the end. I couldn't have been a prouder Dad at that moment. Now, I was worried they would lose and blow the whole night. He was yelling, "DEFENSE" when on defense, and telling them to get a basket on offense. With less than a minute to go and they are down, four. It's going to be close. They just couldn't shut the Thunder down, and eventually lost 109 - 104. He accepted the defeat, and said,"The other team played really good and deserved to win." He was able to enjoy the game, cheer and root, like it was game seven of the NBA finals, and go home happy and so glad that he went.

It was a night I will cherish forever. Oh yeah, there was another kid I was impressed with, Kevin Durant. He scored so effortlessly. Ray Allen was on him most of the night, Pierce covered him the last five minutes or so, but the Celtics didn't have an answer for him. Even though the Celtics lost, it was the best game I have ever been too. Looking forward to doing this with the other majors sports, but for now I will have a big smile on my face, every time I talk about Tyler's first Celtic's game.

A Positive Loss - What?

When the final horn went off the score was 109-104 Thunder. The C's have lost their second straight game on this season long six game home stand, but not all was lost. Eight games remain before the playoffs tip off April 17th. Four at home, and four on the road. Big games in there as well Cleveland, Toronto, Chicago and Milwaukee (twice) which will give us the final look at whether the Celtics team will be able to make that playoff push none of us think they have in them.

With all that being said losing to the Thunder you saw some positives,

1. Rasheed Wallace had his best night in 6 weeks, and I don't mean just the scoring I mean on D and leadership with smart decisions on offense. Things from Sheed we have not seen in awhile.
2. The fight they had, now we have seen the C's with a little extra fight over the past 5-6 games (except for that San Antonio game that was ugly) which means to me that they are getting more and more prepared to make that veteran push in the post season.
3. The bench play, getting more fluid every game. The Finley deal we all made fun of may actually be working out, he is hitting the open J, playing solid (not great) defense and has I think brought a veteran presence on the floor that was needed for this bench to be successful. Finally -
4. KG, he looks to be more and more ready for the post season. Each game this guy is throwing it all out there and doing it without that thought of "will my knee hold up if I go up for this alley-oop" I have loved what I have seen from Garnett on both sides of the floor these last couple of nights.

With the long home stand about to end for the C's they can help themselves out with finishing strong not only in the standings, remember they are still tied for that 3rd spot with Atlanta, but with the confidence of a championship team getting ready to make that big push in the playoffs. That is of course as long as they see themselves as a championship team, and if you ask any of THEM (not us) they will say "YES".

It was intimate and romantic. No, not Coach Belichick's Dinner with Tim Tebow, Timmy and Adam all by themselves doing the show. Although the "dinner" in the North End Monday night has garnered much more attention. The guys will make their season opening AL East predictions and talk about how Tebow may or may not fit in here in New England. Not to mention those fattening Cadbury cream eggs. Wait, what? My New Favorite Show

It's no secret that I love food. It's also no secret that I love TV. So, you would think I would love the Food Network, but to be honest, I am luke warm to the whole thing. The only shows I have ever really been a fan of are Chopped and Paula Dean, but I am coming around to a lot more of the programming.

I am a BIG fan of Ace of Cakes. If you haven't seen it, the show follows Chef Duff and his team from Charm City Cakes through the process of making some of the most elaborate cakes that I have ever seen (take a look at this Millennium Falcon cake.) I have actually always been a fan of the show, but just recently has it become appointment viewing. Chef Duff puts fireworks in his cakes and uses power tools for some of his creations, which is fun to watch.

So, how does this all relate to Wicked Pissa Dude? Well, last night I was watching an episode where the team from Man Caves was in, building Chef Duff a man cave and I noticed something, take a look at this picture below, what do you notice?

That's right, not only is Duff a badass in the kitchen he also appears to be a Boston Red Sox fan. Not just that, he appears to be all about Boston sports. Check out Duff in a Bruins jersey below. As if Ace of Cakes wasn't a great show already, now I am hooked.

Turns out Duff Goldman spent time in a number of different states around the country growing up and one of those places was Sandwich on the Cape where he developed an affinity for Boston sports. From time to time you will see him pledging his allegiance to the Nation on the show and also rockin' the B's jersey too.

The show airs on Tuesday and Thursdays on the Food Network at 10p.

Boston College today announced the "mutual parting of ways" between the university and it's head coach of men's basketball. The decision apparently a week old and not a moment too soon for this fan. The argument for coach Skinner is tangible. BC has lofty expectations for its athletes from academics to moral code. That was the case upon his arrival as it remains today. He leaves BC the schools most successful head coach of all time at 247-165 along with seven trips to the dance since 2001. He had a great run at the Heights but this is coaching and it boils down to what have you done for us lately. If you look at the five seasons since joining the ACC the wins are down and the teams tournament depth has been shallow and the graduation rate is dropping (still higher than FSU - you're shocked I know).

Let's face it, upheaval at the head coaching position will be DeFilipo's legacy when he steps down as AD of the Eagles. Some people are waiting for that day with eager anticipation. Unfortunately for BC fans Gene will be conducting another "nationwide search." OK, shouldn't it be a nationwide search? If it is merely a statewide search hire our very own Coach K. (Kevin Branco) and at least the energy level and colorful language will be at an all time high. Speaking of Coach K and the likes of Scotty Dukes, I am sure they will come at me with all the stats in the world of why this is a bad decision. After all Gene does not have a plan, if he did today's presser would be followed by an announcement of another one tomorrow at 3pm. Alas, there is no new coach yet. Who will it be? What are they willing to spend? Will someone else be able to recruit better than Skinner has as of late?

No doubt the new coach will be local. Most likely from a mid-major school. The latest rumors have Eagles fans dreaming of Bruce Pearl from Tennessee, a BC graduate and a Massachusetts native. He has a son on the team in Knoxville and is in a great spot there. He is a triple dog dare you long shot (read - not a chance). Tommy Amaker at Harvard is already in town and understands how to recruit kids that can read. This would not necessarily be an improvement. He struggled at Michigan and Seton Hall. When the dust settles Eagles fans will most likely be underwhelmed by the hire and realize that it is ultimately just a new face roaming the bench area. I for one will be shocked if Gene is able to lure a big name to the Heights such as Jamie Dixon from Pitt. No doubt any rising star to take the gig will be gone as soon as the next offer comes along. So, prepare to welcome Northeastern's Billy Coen - oh, sorry was that out loud?

The Experiment is Over: Bench Rasheed Wallace

Today, I begin a campaign to encourage Doc Rivers to bench Rasheed Wallace for the rest of the season, including the playoffs. Now before you get all...he has experience, he's a big body to bang around on the blocks, he'll come around...hear me out.

To most (not me) Rasheed Wallace looked like a good pick up at the start of the year. He was a bit old, but he had the skills that the Celtics needed and gave them a good veteran presence off the bench to spell Kendrick Perkins. In an ideal world, he would've come into the rotation and fit right in, but he just didn't do that. He just doesn't fit.

'Sheed is averaging 9ppg and 4.1 boards per game. These aren't bad numbers for a guy off the bench, but they are not Rasheed Wallace numbers. In fact, they are more then 33% off his career averages.

But, he's old.

Well, that's true, he is old and as you get older your numbers start to dwindle, look at the Big Three. However, the downside to Rasheed Wallace goes beyond the numbers. Here's a guy who comes down the floor and will jack a three at the most inopportune time. When you're looking for a guy to post up and get to the rim, he's standing behind the arc and throwing up bricks. This is not the kind of center the Celtics need in the playoffs.

Also, his effort on the defensive end is severely lacking. Rasheed Wallace is the guy on the playground who will scream and yell for the ball on the offensive end, but never once own up to missing an assignment on the defensive end. On this Celtics team, a lackluster effort on the defensive end is just not going to cut it.

I said it on the show this week and I am not the only one to say it, when the Celtics are playing solid defense they are winning. Rasheed detracts from their solid effort on the defensive end and that just won't cut it.

So, Doc, I implore you, give the younger guys a chance. Let them gel. Don't gum up the gears with a has been that nobody wanted on the team in the first place. Ok, maybe it was just me that didn't want him on the team, but who's laughing now?

Burn Baby Burn!

Then there were four...of the most unlikely teams in this tourney to play for the national championship.

Michigan State getting there with one heart attack after another. Izzo is a great coach and his kids show great poise (consider that 3 of the 4 wins that got the Spartans there were by a combined 6 points) but not having to play Kansas helped quite a bit as well. Though this being what the 6th final four in the last 12 years for Izzo I guess I should not be that surprised.

West Virginia, I mean really! Bob Huggins has not won anything since he paid...I mean "convinced" Kenyon Martin to come to Cincinnati. Then was run out of town, but that is not what I am here to talk about. These kids play good defense and caught KY on a night where they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Though to their credit that was the first time this tourney that WV gave up more than 60 points, that is impressive.

The Duke (UGH) Blue Devils as I have said from jump had the easiest road to the Final Four that I have seen in years. I guess the committee wanted to see Duke make their first run since 2001. Not one of the teams they faced were top competition AR-Pine Bluff, Cal, Purdue (remember no Robbie Hummel) and Baylor. Now Baylor can play don't get me wrong and had pushed Duke as hard as any of the other teams, but I still don't believe all those double digit wins would have come against some of the teams the other number ones had to play.

Finally the Cinderella Butler, this team has heart and plays great defense. With a freshman that has no fear (Mack) and a sophomore forcing pro scouts to look his way (Haywood) this team has a chance though slight to shock the basketball world. A great run for this team which now has the countries longest win streak at 24, they should have the confidence and the home court (Butler campus right around the corner from Indy) to make a strong push against Mich State.

Predictions: well since I burned my bracket, hence the title for this blog, I am not sure you should hold me to this. I am going to stick with the upset that I had going this far Butler. It will be a Butler, Duke final. You know what I want to rephrase that "It BETTER be a Butler, Duke final" cause I will not be able to stomach all the talk if Izzo and Coach K face off in the championship. Oh and I did not forget WV, they will NOT beat Duke.

So there you have it, burn your brackets, but sit back and enjoy what has been one of the most maddening March Madness' I have ever witnessed. This Final Four I feel will keep pace with what we have seen thus far.

Episode 165 - Less is More

Adam and Timmy are back for the FINAL weekend wrap-up. What?!?!?!? The FINAL weekend wrap-up? Fear not, we're just consolidating, you know the whole less is more thing, after all, we are in a recession.

No, it has nothing to do with money, just the fact that we thought we could bring you more of the information you want in one solid weekly show, rather then stretching it out to two days a week. Soooooo...listen up as Adam and Timmy spell out the changes for you and then talk about Coach K's encounter with the Boston Celtics Dancers (Shamrockettes was passed on by Wyc.)

The fellas also touch on a former family feud over at Gillette that was recently exposed between Tom Brady and Josh McDaniels and whether or not the Patriots "Franchise" is going to get a new deal before the start of the season. They also discuss what the Red Sox are going to do with Josh Beckett and whether or not he's still considered the ace of the staff or if there even is one at this point.

The Celtics are streaking (I said the Celtics, NOT the Celtics dancers, sorry boys) and the Bruins are still reeling from some hard hitting.

The shock of the night goes to Adam who is positioned as a possible front runner in the Wicked Pissa Dude March Madness bracket. If the Mountaineers of West Virginia can win one more game, Coach K might get knocked off the mountain. And a check of the Fantasy leagues continues to be kind to the Branco family.

In "almost" professional sports, Scotty Dukes and the WickedPissaDude.com Men's League basketball team won their first game of the season 69-62. GOOOOOOOOOO TEAM!!!

Fringe Report : Martinsville

It's the 6th race in the Sprint Cup schedule, and the are heading to the mountains of western Virginia. Welcome to Martinsville Speedway. Martinsville is the smallest track on the circuit at just a touch over 1/2 a mile. With banked turns and a flat straight, which makes passing difficult, there will be plenty of bumping. Known to many as the "paperclip", because of its shape, the turns are short and the straight a ways long. The average speed is 95 mph, because it is a short track, not much time to get up to full speed. The brakes will be used often, so look for the driver who uses there brakes the best to be at the front when this ends. With tough passing on the track, a lot of ground needs to be made up in the pits, so there will be plenty of pressure on the pit crews in this one. Some of the drivers that have had success in the past are, Jimmie Johnson, who has won 3 of the last 5 this year, 2 of the last 3 at Martinsville and 4 top 5 finishes in the last 5 races here. Also finding success in the VA is Johnson's teammate and part car owner of the 48 car, Jeff Gordon. Gordon has been in the top 5 the last 5 races at Martinsville. Some other names to look out for are Tony Stewart, Jamie McMurray, Dale Jr., and Virginia's own Jeff Burton. So, pull out your Bud or Miller Lite hat and have a big bowl of Cheerios, cause it's time for the Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500.

The Fringe Report : Must See WWE

Well it's that time of the year. The biggest spectacle in sports entertainment. Wrestlemania. For the 26th installment of Wrestlemania the boss with wrestle someone he screwed, a career will go against a streak, and pride against joining the straight edge society.

This years event will open up with the Straight Edge superstar CM Punk, squaring up with fan favorite Rey Mysterio. CM Punk has humiliated Rey many times and the last straw was when he did it in front of his family on Smackdown a couple of weeks ago. Rey is fighting for his pride, but if he loses he must join CM Punks, "Straight Edge Society.' My gut feeling on this is, Mysterio will get screwed and have to join the S.E.S. The second match will contain son's of former WWE wrestlers. Cowboy Bob Orton's son, Randy Orton, The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase's son, Ted DiBiase and Dusty Rhodes son, Cody Rhodes, in a Triple Threat Match. The three son's were in a group called Legacy, and the purpose of legacy was to keep Randy Orton a Champion, DiDiase and Rhodes finally got sick of Randy and each other. The winner will prove he is better than the other two. I believe Randy Orton will remain the dominant being of the three. Third off will be The Game Triple H vs. The Celtic Warrior Sheamus. Back in the Elimination Chamber, The Game pinned Sheamus and cost him to lose the belt, Batista hold the belt now. The winner of this contest will most likely be the number one contender for the WWE Championship. On tap next will be the battle for the unified tag team Championships. The Big Show and The Miz, known as Showmiz will face Miz' former tag team partner John Morrison and R Truth. Showmiz will most likely maintain the belts. Now, for what is usually the most exciting match of the night. The Money in the Bank Ladder Match. Ladder matches are historically the best matches. This year there will be 10 WWE superstars vying for the chance to go after any title, at any time. The contestants are, The Big Red Machine Kane, high flying Evan Bourne, Kofi Kingston, M.V.P., Dolph Ziggler, The Gold Standard Shelton Benjamin, The All American American Jack Swagger, Intercontinental Champ Drew McIntyre and ladder match veterens Christian and Matt Hardy.

The night is just warming up. At the Royal Rumble, The Rated R Superstar Edge won the Royal Rumble that gave him the opportunity to compete for a championship at Wrestlemania. He chose to face Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship. Over the past month, Edge and Jericho have exchanged comments and finishing moves on each other. Jericho with the Code Breaker and Edge with the Spear. Who will have the last laugh? Spear, Spear, Spear Next, the Animal, WWE Champ Batista puts his title on the line against Massachusetts own, John Cena. This match is personal. Batista has taken cheap shots at Cena for a month, now he has to meet him face to face. In the past Batista hasn't held titles for long, and Cena has. Although lately Cena hasn't held onto a title for long, losing it to new WWE Superstar Sheamus last year. My prediction is that Cena will win and face Triple H at the next pay-per-view. Now the match 13 years in the making. Back when Bret "The Hitman" Hart was ending his contract with the WWE to join WCW, he was facing Shawn Michaels in Toronto in front of his home fans. Vince told him that he would win the match and leave as a champion. But when Shawn Michaels put Bret into a submission hold, Vince came out told the ref to call for the bell, and call Shawn Michaels the winner. Bret was pissed and spit in Vince's face and later backstage punched him in the face. All of this was real and not staged. Now, Bret Hart is a WWE Hall of Famer and his Dad will be given that honor this year, the night before Wrestlemania. Bret wanted to put the past behind him. He made amends with Shawn Michaels and wanted to do the same with Vince. Vince kicked him in the groin and screwed him again, setting up this No Holds Barred match, where The Hitman will avenge his screwing.

Now for the Main Event. The Minister of Darkness, Undertaker will put his 17-0 Wrestlemania record on the line against the Heart Break Kid, Shawn Michael's career. Last year Shawn Michaels failed to end the streak as so, many before him have. Not that I want to see HBK's career end, but I will be very disappointed if they end the streak. At this point, the Undertaker deserves to keep the streak in tack.

I look forward to watching this event every year. My son looks forward to it and I enjoy the together time with him as he struggles to stay up for the whole thing. I know it is tough to shell out the money every month for a pay-per-view, that is why we only order a couple a year. Wrestlemania is always one of them. The WWE puts everything into this event. There are always surprises during the night. I look forward to commenting on this event next week. For true fans, I don't have to tell you, but for the one's that may have just stumbled upon wrestling recently. Wrestlemania is a must see.

So once again the Statler & Waldorf of the staff have ailments and therapy to discuss. Rubba Shoes and his bad wing square off against Timmy and his bad wheel. Once the geriatrics get their sportscreme applied they might actually talk sports. Tiger is coming back for The Masters and the guys can't wait. Now there is even a press conference to kick off the festivities. Frozen Four updates are all part of the hockey talk as the NHL skates closer to the second season. Scotty Dukes checks in with his broken bracket and the latest on "Team Green." Will Tommy ca$h in on his new Patriots contract or leave some money on the table for Coach to get some other groceries? Episode 163 - Bracket Breaker

In a shocking development, as the U.S. Congress prepared to cast their votes for the most influential and controversial piece of legislation in the countries history, the guys discussed gardening tips. Actually, pretty close to that. Timmy argued that our elected officials were sowing the seeds of a single payer system. Adam spent most of the opening segment trying to convince Timmy that he was not going to be goose stepping in knee boots any time soon. Did Timmy buy it? We'll see. Hey guess what - some sports got shoehorned in as well. The Sox have some new bottles to pop in the clubhouse come October and a new member of the team to pop the with as well. The Celtics are starting to mesh a little bit as a team on the mend. Is it too late to get the mojo going before the playoffs? Timmy talks hockey - both Bruins and BC by himself (Adam takes a nap). While the biggest story of the weekend is the collapse of the Jayhawks. The Final Four takes on a whole new look - we're not in Kansas anymore. All this and a wrap on the "first half" scores from fantasy hockey and basketball. Oh, Coach K has finally produced the hardware that everyone has been waiting to see. Episode 161 - Drinking Games

Here in New England we love our sports and we love our drinks. As of late the cocktini consumption has been to dull the pain rather than enhance the enjoyment. The Celtics are inconsistent. The Bruins are deplorable and the Patriots are laying in wait. The Red Sox get a pass for now, at least until opening night against the Yankees. Well the guys wrap up the St. Patrick's Day Weekend with a visit from Uncle Dukes fresh off the selection show for March Madness. Adam was the oldest person at the parade and Timmy and his family drank Irish Milkshakes and ate corn beef. It is all here along with the fantasy round up as we head into the playoffs. There is an old saying, if you love something enough to let it go it will find its way back to you. Well it wasn't a love fest when he left, but who cares? Because he has returned! Not Gonna Say I Told You So...BUT

Last night the Boston Celtics lost their fifth game of the season, leaving them four games away from the 73-9 mark that Rasheed Wallace predicted at the beginning of the season. Doesn't look so likely right now Sheed does it?

The Celtics lost 98-97 to the Philadelphia 76ers in a game that they should've won. Who is to blame? Rasheed Wallace if you ask Frank Dell'Appa at boston.com who wrote this article about the Wallace's ejection from last nights game and he has a point.

OK, I know Rasheed has been a valuable asset the Celtics this season and will continue to be down the stretch, but this is exactly the thing that I was worried about when we signed him. He is a loose cannon and one that could go off at any time and hurt us in a tight spot.

In this case it was only a regular season game against the Sixers, but what if he gets tossed from an Eastern Conference Finals game against Lebron and the Cavs or Dwight Howard and the Magic? What then? Do we forgive and forget?

I don't like to be woah is me, but let's be real, he is who is. The Celtics are not the Patriots who took Corey Dillon and turned him into a model citizen or revived a struggling Randy Moss (until last weekend.) The Celtics are still the Celtics. They can't keep their point guard in check let alone a bad apple like Wallace.

I am not saying let's dump him, I am just saying that Doc needs to reign him in before he gets out of control. If he implodes at a crucial juncture in the season we could be S.O.L. and everyone knows this is probably our last shot at a 18th ring.

Tough Morning in Boston

Boston fans woke up this morning to some harsh realities. First off, it looks very likely that the Boston Red Sox will be sending Mike Lowell packing. The trade was reported late last night and while nothing is confirmed at this time, it looks like Lowell will be shipped to Texas for Max Ramirez.

The deal is not set in stone yet, but to see Mikey Lowell bounced is just a sad thing all the way around. The classiest guy in the organization and a member of the '07 champs, Mike Lowell was one of the biggest reasons to watch the Red Sox in the last couple of years. Getting rid of him, gives me one more reason to not be upset that I don't have NESN.

Speaking of which, normally I loathe Shaughnessy and his snarky and mostly annoying columns, but I think in this case, he has a point. Read his most recent column about how the Red Sox have "given up" competing with the Yankees here.

Then there's the ailing Patriots who are "rebuilding." Nostradumbass has been talking about the 7 years of famine and the rebuilding that is in progress in Foxboro for months now and the national sports media is getting on board too. Check out this piece on ESPN.com.

As much as it pains me to say it, Nostradumbass might be on to something. We'll have much more on all of these stories on the Wicked Pissa Podcast, but this has just been a bummer of a morning to be cheering on any of the Boston sports teams...oh wait, the C's are still going strong, I guess.

Episode 132 - Movin' On Up

Not only is Timmy moving out of the old Studio NH to the NEW and improved Studio NH, but the New England Patriots improved their record to 7-3 and remain atop the division with a good win over the J-E-T-S!!

The Celtics squeaked out a win over the NY Knicks - yes they SQUEAKED out an OT win against the NY KNICKS!! The boys will dissect the win and the upcoming Celtics schedule as well.

Rubba Shoes is filling in for Timmy and Adam is holding down the fort leading up to Thanksgiving weekend.

Scotty Dukes Wolverines are in Madison, Rubba Shoes Irish are at Pittsburgh and Timmy's Eagles are in Virginia to take on the Cavaliers. Not to mention another flight to Indianapolis for our New England Patriots. What gives? Dr. Bobby Dugan puts the guys through a verbose yet informational explanation of why the Colts always seem to host these games. They'll check to see if anything is boiling on Theo's "hot stove" and round up the fantasy scores to see who has bragging rights, for now at least. This weekend the Wicked Pissa Staff witnessed a couple of new tricks. Timmy, Gooch and Wayne watched as Lo-Mo made open holes and positive yardage disappear. While at the same time Adam was treated to a Steve Miller Band concert with his levitating "Little Brother" footage from YouTube forthcoming. (that is Criss Angel on the left not Adam's "l.b.") Other than that Timmy hit the trails in an effort to raise more money for Autism towards his goal of 14 races this season -you can get involved here. A steak had to be good to take a picture of it and you can see here that Timmy's wedding steak was phenomenal!! Chad and Mrs. Chad did it up right for their guests at the event of the weekend. The Wicked Pissa Dude family congratulates the pair on their nuptials and we wish them all the best married bliss has to offer them.

The boys chat with Scotty Dukes and Bobby Dugan and get their picks for football and a little fantasy trash talk about how great Dugan's team in Fantasy Basketball is...I knew there was a reason we didn't let him be a part of football.

There was even some talk about BC, believe it or not. Ugh...

Race #12 - Great Bay 5K - 10.24.09

This one was cold and rainy. You can tell the difference between novice runners and those that expect to place in the top ten. Clothing. I along with most of the field was covered up in compression pants and a light windbreaker. The leaders were in loincloths and flip flops. All kidding aside, this was the final race in the Seacoast Race Series. I did a select few of the race series events this year and they are always well organized and executed. We finished 283rd out of 771 runners in 24:59. This leaves Team Cameron with just two final races for the running season this year, the first of which is next week. Please help us raise awareness and research funding for Autism as our efforts directly effect the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation. If you have the means and willingness to get involved we appreciate all of the help that you have to offer. Join our team here First Giving. NBA Season Preview

When the season tips off this evening on TNT with the Boston Celtics vs. Cleveland Cavaliers there will be title dreams on both sides, and why not?!? Look at the two of these two teams and you will have a hard time finding a better Eastern Conference team out there. There are a lot of talented teams in the East but not many as deep as the two teams kicking off the season in Cleveland. Adding Rasheed Wallace and Marquis Daniels gives the team a scoring one two punch off the bench they so desperately needed last season. The Cavs bring in a possibly rejuvenated and motivated Shaq and I use the word "possibly" as we have heard Shaq say that he is going to do win this and win that before, but that did not happen when he went to the Suns so now can he prove that he is really ready to "win a ring for the king".

The rest of East will be looking up at these to two teams for most if not all the regular season, but I am not sure if I can say the same about the reigning champions. As much as it pains me the Lakers look more dangerous this season than last considering the fact that replace Trevor Ariza with Ron Artest! Fair trade.?.not for the rest of the league. The Spurs are going to be very good and so will the Denver Nuggets, but I don't think any of those teams will touch the Lakers this season.

So my predictions are below for each division and then playoffs and of course the champs. Now I am no "nostrodumbass" so I will do the best I can.

O.K. all of that topped off by that fact that Adam was busy spittin' straight knowledge (his words, not ours) with Jay-Z at the Mullins Center in Amherst brings us to what may seem to be a shoe-horned Sean Kingston reference as a title for this weeks episode.

It was a rainy, snowy, windy and cold day at Foxboro for the Patriots tilt against the Tennessee Titans and more importantly it was the Wicked Pissa Dude company retreat. The Patriots won 59-0 and Sam Adams Oktoberfest won 15-0 v. Scotty Dukes.

Are the Patriots back? Has Tom Brady snapped out of his fog? Is the defense the real deal? Is Scotty Dukes sober yet? All of these questions are answered on this episode of the Wicked Pissa Dude Podcast Weekend Wrap-up with Adam and Timmy.

Unfortunately it was so wet and cold that there is no evidence of the retreat, so you'll have to rely on this recap of the experience with the boys.
