Sad news out of the nation today. Plenty more coverage on this story as it develops, but know this, the Boston Red Sox have traded Manny Ramirez to the LA Dodgers and in return will recieve Jason Bay from the Pirates in a three way deal. The Pittsburgh Pirates will get four minor leaguers in the deal. Labels: Boston Red Sox, Jason Bay, LA Dodgers, Manny Ramirez, Pittsburgh Pirates, sports illustrated

I just got in from a special Saturday night edition of "Beer Night" at Scotty Dukes house. He was gracious enough to host the Cotto-Margarito fight festivities. The three under cards left us feeling unfulfilled and I was leaning towards a Cotto route of Margarito. Miguel is historically the more decisive and accurate puncher.
That theme held true for this fight although He was out hustled by the tenacity of Margarito and his desire to impose his will and hand Cotto his first defeat of his professional career. And that he did in a display of dominance that gained momentum in the 8th and 9th rounds. Clearly giving it his all he battled through every exchange and continued to press Cotto to defend himself. He was unwavering in his pursuit of Cotto and seemed fixated on gaining a K.O. or a T.K.O.
This was not going to the judges and in the 11th it was ended as Cotto took a final knee and his corner and the ref stopped the contest almost simultaneously. Nice fight gentlemen. See you on ESPN Classic Wednesday Night.

It started out good, but went quickly downhill in the 6th inning when the Yankees ripped off 4 runs on their way to a 10-3 win. Even the return of Manny Ramirez from "injury" wasn't enough to stop the bleeding as the Red Sox dropped back to back games against the Yankees. It was all I could handle not to throw my television set out my window when Joe Buck and Tim McCarver spent an entire inning, literally an entire inning, not a half an inning, but an entire inning, talking about the Manny Ramirez "saga." I didn't throw my television out the window which was unfortunate because that meant I had to watch the rest of this game.
Is it too early to panic about this series? The Yankees look like the Red Sox did in the 1st half of the season and the Red Sox look like the Yankees of the 1st half. The real scary thing is that for as bad of a 1st half of the season as the Yankees had, coming out of the All-Star Break, they are on the heels of the 1st place Rays.
This game hurts me on more levels then just the fact that the Red Sox lost, it also hurts on a personal level. You see, at the begining of the season I made a bet with my buddy Jeremy that every series between the Red Sox and the Yankees this season was worth a six pack to the winner, not so bad right? Well, it will be if the Red Sox lose the season series, because if that happens then I have to buy him a Yankees jersey and actually buy it, in the store, be seen, buying a Yankees jersey. These a-holes better win tomorrow.

Well at least Manny is back in the lineup. Whether He will remain "healthy" enough to stay remains to be seen. The MRI negative. His demeanor nuetral. The outlook for the Red Sox with Manny and Papi together again, positive. Top of the 4th and Cano just took Timmy deep to center. Ugh, we are tied 2-2. More later...timmy@wickedpissadude.com

A 1-0 loss, mid-season at Fenway Park, not typically a heart breaker, but this one definately was. This had the makings of a classic, with Papi returning on a Friday night at Fenway against the hated New York Yankees, but it was not meant to be.Labels: Big Papi, Boston Red Sox, David Ortiz, Fenway Park, Joba Chamberlain, Mike Lowell, New York Yankees
I was trying to think how I would hype this series if I was doing the introductions for Fox Sports, because I know they’ll have some extravagant package complete with the Pedro Martinez/Don Zimmer throwdown, the Varitek/A-Rod fight and probably for good measure they’ll throw in the Aaron Boone home-run, just to be pricks. So, how would I open the series? Probably something like this.“It’s the battle for #2. The most storied rivalry in sports history writes a new chapter on this July night at Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox, winners of two championships in the last four years. The New York Yankees, winless in October since signing A-Rod. This time it’s for all the marbles, (ok, well not even close to all the marbles, they are battling for second place, but you get my drift.) With the return of Big Papi the Boston Red Sox look to hang the Yankees out to dry and build on their three game lead in the East while putting the Devil Rays in their rear view mirror. It’s America’s pastime at it’s best, Fox Sports presents Yankees baseb…errr…Major League Baseball on Fox.”
Sidebar here: You gotta kind of feel bad for the Rays. I know I know, they are tied with the Red Sox for 1st in the AL East, why are wee feeling bad for them? It’s simple really, nobody cares. Nobody. Not you, not me, not ESPN, nobody cares. They are playing games this weekend too and not one person cares. I’ll feel better about them when they are solidly in third or fourth
place, you know, after this weekend.Speaking of this weekend, I am boldly predicting a sweep. I know the Red Sox have been faltering a bit coming out of the All-Star Break and the Yankees have been red hot, winning six in a row, but let me lay out the facts for a Boston sweep.
1.) Big Papi is back. The crowd is gonna be hyped and he’s been tearing the cover off the ball in his rehab starts, talk about an emotional lift. I think he goes, 6-9 this weekend with 2 HR and 7 RBI’s. (Now it’s in writing I am screwed)
2.) Home Sweet Home. The Sox are back at Friendly Fenway after a loooooooong west coast road trip. I am not even talking about the length of time, I am just talking about the exhaustion they must be feeling after some grueling games with the Angels and it takes quite a lot out of you to sweep any team.
3.) It’s the Yankees…please, like we aren’t going to be amped for this series? If we sweep, the Yankees are 6 games behind us and we’re ready to really start the second half of the season. Terry Francona is rocking back and forth in the dugout at Fenway ready for the game to start and I can assume right now that Tek is eating his Cocoa Crispies with his pads on ready to go.

The series breaks down like this:
Friday: 7:05p on NESN
Saturday: 3:55p on FOX
Sunday: 8:05p on ESPN
Labels: Aaron Boone, Boston Red Sox, Don Zimmer, Fenway Park, Friendly Fenway, Jason Varitek, Pedro Martinez

President Bush has signed a bill honoring the late NBC newsman Tim Russert by naming a stretch of highway in New York after him.The portion of U.S. Route 20a is close to Buffalo, the hometown of Russert, the host of NBC's "Meet the Press" and its Washington bureau chief, who died of a heart attack June 13.
Designated the "Timothy J. Russert Highway," the span, located in Orchard Park, runs near Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills. Russert was an avid sports fan who was passionate about the Bills, his hometown football team.

Dice-K (11-1) went 7 1/3 with some help from the human hitting clinic JD Drew (1 HR 3 RBI) and the boys put themselves in position to hand Bucholtz the ball for the sweep. Sox will try to do just that Wednesday at 4:40 pm est. Then it is home sweet home to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the AL East. A great day for Boston. A great day for Boston College. A great day for the little guy. I mean that in the broad sense as in "underdog." Also a great day for "the" little guy Doug Flutie. All of his accomplishments, most of which go largely unheralded outside of 128, have finally been spotlighted. He is a Hall of Famer as far as the NCAA is concerned. Inducted alongside Joe Paterno today who himself took credit for Flutie's success.
Joe Pa pointed out that in 3 out of the 4 meetings during Flutie's eligibility at BC the Nittany Lions prevailed on the scoreboard, but Doug certainly put up HOF numbers. Flutie enjoyed the day with fellow greats and the opportunity to reflect once again on his great career. My words not his. Thanks Doug, you've had this day coming since November 23, 1984. Well worth the wait. New England is proud to call you our own. I will be thrilled to tell my boys one day that i shook your hand after a game once. My boys will hear stories from their father and grandfather about this kid from Baltimore by way of Natick that was 5 foot nothing and 100 and nothing that took his will and determination to make an example and a career to be proud of forever.
Douglas Richard Flutie. Father. Husband. Son. Leader. Football Player. Class Act. Now, Hall of Famer.
It was pure Red Sox baseball. The Sox pulled ahead early. Gave up the lead in the middle and were on the verge of coming back in the ninth. Manny was at the plate, looking to just be Manny. There was one out, runners on 1st and 2nd, hitters count and Manny hit an infield pop up. It took two pitches to get Mikey Lowell and the rest was history. As much as it sucks that the Red Sox lost and are no longer in 1st place, I will say, this is way MLB is so exciting throughout the season. You never know what's going to happen. Last week on Wicked Pissa Dude Radio we were fired up that the Sox were in 1st place and one week later, on the verge of another Wicked Pissa Dude Radio show, the Sox are now 1 game back and the battle for first begins.
I imagine that Seattle will treat the BoSox slightly better then the City of Angels did, but who knows. With Papi on the verge of coming back to the line-up and Lowrie filling in pretty nicely for Lugo, the Sox will be fine. It just would have been nice for them to be able to split this weekend series with the Angels, but such is not the case.
As Timmy would say, we cannot win nationally televised games. My take on it is that Jeannie Glasko (I don't know how to spell her name and I hate her so much it's not even worth Googling it, so F-her) is jinxing the Red Sox and obviously Kevin Kennedy hates the Sox. The only silver lining to today's round of Fox Saturday Baseball was, NO JOE BUCK!! AMEN!!!

Are you kidding me? Now they are going to look into and keep a closer eye on players to make sure they are not flashing gang signs? And it’s all because of Paul Pierce? This is just funny to me.No, there is nothing funny about gangs or gang signs. It’s very serious business on the streets of cities all across the country (including BTV – WORD.) Let’s be real here though, does anybody really think that a professional athlete, with cameras on them all of the time during a game, are going to flash a gang sign? This is absolute absurdity.
Besides, this season, Paul Pierce won’t have to flash a gang sign, he’ll just shove his NBA Finals MVP in the face of all haters and they will be blinded by his ring. Now that’s a gang sign I could get behind.

James Posey's agent announced today that the most coveted of all free agents on the market, James Posey has signed a deal with the New Orlean's Hornets for $25 mil. This begs the question, has Danny Ainge earned our respect enough for us not to question his judgement? I don't know. I mean if Belichick or Theo make a move, no one in the Boston area will ever question it. We might be pissed if Manny leaves after this year, but if Theo said it was the right thing, we would agree.
In this case though, can we really give Danny a pass? I don't think so. He made what, a couple of good moves last year? I know I know, he's a god for bringing KG and Ray Ray in along with the other role players, but that's ONE season. If he does it consistently and makes moves that will keep us contenders for an extended amount of time, then he'll earn that right. For now, Mr. Ainge, talk to me at the end of the 2008-2009 season when we have ring #2 and you will have Theo/Billy status, but until then get on the free agent market my friend and find a replacement for Posey.
As for Posey, James, you weren't a Celtic for nearly long enough. You were a superstah in our eyes and we will be forever greatful for the things that you did to help us win Banner #17. Go ahead man, get your money. Enjoy NO and maybe we'll see you in the playoffs...probably not.

I know this is a Boston sports blog, but this is THE story of the day and anybody that knows me, knows that I cannot keep my mouth shut when I have an opinion on something, so here goes.Mr. Favre, I write this with all due respect. I don’t typically bestow praise on players from teams that are not affiliated with Boston, so it takes a lot for me to say that you are by far one of the greatest players to have ever played the game of football. Not only that, you seem to be one of the nicest and most genuine people to play the game as well (although we have not met.) So, it is with a heavy heart that I say, Mr. Favre, please HANG ‘EM UP.
You have given Cheese heads sixteen very memorable seasons and have delighted fans both young and old with your talents and flare for the spectacular. You even earned the respect of this Patriots fan when you beat my team in the Super Bowl. You have recorded some of the most insane numbers in the history of professional sports included racking up some impressive records for most touchdown passes (422), most passing yards (61,655), most career completions (5,377) and most career attempts (8,758.)
Not only do you hold these and other records, but you have also proven to be one of the most reliable quarterbacks in the history of the game, playing in an NFL best 253 consecutive starts. You also have the most career wins for a starting quarterback. And I am not even done yet, because you have won the NFL MVP award three times, more then any other player in the
history of the game.Mr. Favre, these numbers, and the indelible mark you have left on football fans throughout the nation and around the world, are your legacy. So, please, I say to you, Hang ‘Em Up. Go out with your head held high, knowing that last year was a spectacular run that may not be duplicated again and most definitely won’t be duplicated with the Pack.
Dragging this out for much longer will only sully your reputation and force fans and pundits alike (not that the pundits matter) to focus on your battle with the Green Bay Packers trying to extend your career as the one thing that is mentioned when your name is brought up. You don’t want to be remembered as, a great quarterback who didn’t know when it was time to call it quits.
Now, far be it for me to tell someone with a passion for playing football to hang ‘em up, because I know what it’s like to have a passion for something (chocolate covered strawberries in my case…ok maybe not, it’s radio,) but I hope that when I am still on the microphone screaming at Timmy about who the Pats should pick up in the 2056 draft and I am using a bed pan, someone will have the presence of mind to ask me gently to call it quits.

Ok, I am sure Alex Rodriguez would have you believe that he is humbled by the fact that he gets to do what he loves for a living. (Boy that picture is distracting, huh?) So then Alex, do it! He has once again been voted for overwhelmingly to start at 3rd base for the American League. The Yankees and the Sox own the infield this year, fine. I would hope that if the same were true and the All-Star Gala were taking place at Fenway for the final time our third baseman would approach the "break" differently.
You know what is the best news out of all of this? Arod was concerned that participating in the derby would "set his swing back" three weeks or so according to his estimation. Well if that is true, he probably should have done it. By excusing himself from the festivities his swing will be right on track to slump just in time for the pennant race. It's a shame too, he could have used a nice playoff bonus this year with the divorce and all. Hey Alex I promise to check in on you and your swing this October. Should I call the Miami Villa or is Cynthia getting that too?

According to a Boston Globe article the Boston Bruins are being shopped around by the Jacobs family. That sentence alone as I sit her and write it sends a warm tingle down my spine and makes me happy in my special place. Jacobs denies the report. Well I feel as of late in the world of sports, where there is smoke there is fire. Burn baby burn!
A front office informant claims that Jeremy is shopping the team to his billionaire friends. One call Jeremy. 1-800-dial-bob. Please Mr. Kraft if you would like to expedite your almost certain domination of this molten marble we call planet earth. Pull the trigger. I will gather my friends to begin to dig the moat around New England so we will no longer be infested by those other cities (losers) in this great US of A. We will call this new island of athletic prowess and marveled business acumen "Kraftopia."

For the first 8 innings, the Boston Red Sox played the most boring game in the history of Sunday afternoon games. Then, with a 2-0 lead in the ninth, they brought in Pap who proceeded to make it "interesting. In the end, it was the All Stah, Dustin Pedroia who caught the third out of the inning and gave the Sox the win and sole posession of 1st place heading into the All Star break.Quite honestly there wasn't much of note in this game, other then a solid outing for Dice-K who went 6 innings, striking out seven and giving up four hits and five walks. Good game for Dice, but still barely any run support. That'll have to end coming out of the break.
Youuuuuuuuk had a scary moment in the fifth. After getting hit by a pitch he would leave the game and is uncertain about his all star game appearence. X-rays were negative, but they may play it safe with his wrist.
So, the Sox go into the break, up .5 games, on the Rays. 1st place into the break. That's the way it should be.

After watching Sportscenter this morning and having to sit through the painful segment on whether or not Louisville, KY was Titletown USA, I had to try and find a way to end this insanity. So, we here at wickedpissadude.com are starting a petition to implore ESPN to end their search for Titletown USA and officially name Boston, MA Titletown. Everyone knows it is true, but since nobody wants to admit it, I'll refresh their memory.

On to my aforementioned state of the "Town."
The Boston Bruins - Whiffed or didn't even swing at UFA superstar Marian Hossa. Hmmm? Peter Chiarelli baffled me on that one. The other offers could not have been that daunting if Hossa settled on one year in Detroit.
I won't even change planes in Detroit. Right now someone in Detroit is offended at what i said about their city. Although they are reading this in the prone position on their living room floor as not to catch any stray "hospitality nuggets" from the "neighborhood watch program."I guess we are banking on a bounce back year from former Hab Michael Ryder. Optimism also Abounds for the triumphant return of Patrice Bergereon. Will he ever be 100% again? That remains to be seen. I am sticking to my prediction Bruins over the Avalanche in 7. Warm up the Duck Boats.
The New England Patriots - Who thinks we won't be in Tampa in early February? C'mon show of hands. That's what I thought.
The rest of the country just spent an entire off season bashing an 18-1 football team with the easiest schedule on the board. Training camp is now just days away...welcome Jerrod Mayo and take care of bizwax! The Boston Celtics - SIGN JAMES POSEY.
The Boston Red Sox - Feel free to shake things up and go on an extended winning streak after the break. Last summer wasn't boring, it was a delight. Make some moves before the deadline and lets go back to back. I can not get enough of this. I know I certainly don't wish for anything less. Pedroia is an absolute gem and it would be fun to find out what Lowry could do in extended duty.
Put together quality, confidence building wins. Make it a no-brainah Theo, the front office and the players deserve the opportunity to win this thing going away. Just ask the Danny and the rest of the Celtics if 131-92 in game 6 was boring or redeeming. On second thought, don't bother Danny, he needs to keep the line open for Posey's agent. Get it done.New England Revolution - The MLS Cup Final is a game you are allowed to win. The Kraft family owns you for gawds sake. GO do it!
I love a parade, the quackity quack, the dum ditty dum, the la la la la......

Also on the show this week, instead of a 4 game sweep which looked inevitable at the end of the day on Friday, the Sox had to settle for a split at Spankmee Stadium. Leaving me with no interest in ever seeing the Spankmees again and also not winning the six pack I bet my friend that the Sox would sweep.
